Gest account seems working great.

I only found 2 bugs in the guest account by my understanding of it.
  1. Window title in browser tab is foobar sometimes.
  2. Get rid of the Tags dropdown which is useless to guests.
Neither of those is a show stopper but I should fix the title. The guest comment window seems to be working great.

Have you gotten a chance to peruse and test the guest account yet? Please do.

i don't like the idea that the comment field (even the content) is pre filled out ... makes spamming way way too easy
Huh? What is prefilled?
I do fill in name and email if you provided them. But that is stored in your browser only.
Nothing comes from the system.
If anything is filled it is from your browser.
And robots cannot spam with this unless they are full javascript robots, which are extremely rare, and even then I have tricks that will likely keep them out.

this was made at the old site. note how the name is hyperlinked to the my website.

My browser is not saving the comment content. But I can clear that, no problem.
nathan@fbi 2015-12-22 19:28:37 [item 19351#38900]
Should be clearing the comment now.

well at least it was suposed to be hyperlinked ... dont know what changed
nathan@fbi 2015-12-22 19:32:14 [item 19351#38906]
I don’t know what you refer too. Explain better please. I am sure if there were a feature there I didn’t know to duplicate it.
the old site asks for email and web page

Seth says
seth 2015-12-22 19:20:37 [item 19351#38879]
so where does my email go ... if it goes nowhere, then why ask for it
nathan@fbi 2015-12-22 19:22:49 [item 19351#38885]
Because it’s a good habit, and I actually can just throw them into a comma text file for later. Email addresses are gold bars on the internet. Even if we only keep them in house, it’s like money in the bank when we are given one.
seth@niche 2015-12-22 19:33:42 [item 19351#38907]
ok … then show it on the page for use to read … the person put in there email by his choice … we dont say we are going to hid it …. actually if he puts in his web page, that is even better
nathan@fbi 2015-12-22 19:35:51 [item 19351#38909]
No. We can never print emails. That is disallowed by the new internet usage standards put out by congress. Even if it is implied, we have to explicitly ask the user with a bunch of legal mumbo jumbo to do it.

Okay. Specify whatever and I’ll simply do it. But we can’t print an email address or even hide it in the page where it can be found without explicit permission and tracking and storing their giving of it.
seth@niche 2015-12-22 19:45:23 [item 19351#38913]
okay no email.    i say collect the website (optional) and hyperlink it to the name if present.
Okay.

that is risky .. of course … because it is a spam attractor.  hence the captcha on the old website.   we did have a big prob with spam when we first opened.  if i remember right that captcha cut off a lot of that.
Are you not hearing me? The industry considers javascript based protection far better against spam than captcha. And I have javascript techniques in place that go beyond what the norm is. The likelyhood a million user active site would get any spam through this is about nil.

You can also, btw, use social login for open comments. Even if you don’t use that for the site itself, it could be required to open comment.
yes looking forward to that kind of thing … and much more social sharing.  i still think that a website that plays well with all the other websites, especially the big ones, is actualy part of our niche.   lots of work there though.

For a robot to navigate the tortured jQuery path needed to submit this info to the server it would need highly advanced AI and lots of trial and error, which we could also detect and block.
seth@niche 2015-12-22 19:55:26 [item 19351#38921]
well super …. didnt know about any of that javascript protection against robots.   so no captcha.
nathan@fbi 2015-12-22 19:56:53 [item 19351#38922]
Right. Not need for robots. The only problem now is human spam. And one way around that is require social site login to guest comment.

i did follow a lot of hyperinked guests comments … some with excelant results.  and if the person is actually legitimate in there comment it kind of does motivate him … not a bad thing, in my book.
nathan@fbi 2015-12-22 20:03:54 [item 19351#38926]
Yes. I would put them in until they became a problem. Then add social login.

Human spam is a different matter. That, as Mark said, is the downside of open comments. You either live with it and delete it or you don’t have open comments.
i found that it was not really a problem to just delete human spam.

the robots were a bigger problem.  i fought them for about a year there .. tried all kinds of things … part of that is prolly still recorded back there … maybe spam … i forget what i called it.

but a website that is inactive collects it … probably tell people to deactivate open comments when they become inactive.

It would be super easy to add a little of our own AI to detect likely spam content patterns and flag those for someone to review in admin (or a spam review group) and one click zap ones that don’t work for us.

don’t know how my fingers fell into that one
nathan@fbi 2015-12-22 20:10:18 [item 19351#38930]
No problem. It had the wrong line height set though so when it wrapped it wrote over the original line. I would not have see that happen without such a long line of it. Good job!
