well the current rte does not allow for insertion of HTML <table> elements. This is probably because tables have been depreciated in HTML5.
But it does allow for their editing old ones see home security .
Our question is: how to get back the full ability to insert (or embed) and edit square arrays in our items?

were you trying to embed that google spreadsheet in the item?

Image links in this table are to files on your local computer, so they don’t show. You would need to upload the images and point to them, or imbed them as data-uri images.
Example img src: file:///C:/Users/MARKRU~1/AppData/Local/Temp/msohtml1/01/clip_image001.jpg

The RTE has the full ability to create and edit tables. However, this ability is easily abused by unknowing authors. Once you put a table in a page you have prevented it from responsively adapting to different devices.
Sometimes you don’t care. The ability to arrange data in a two dimensional array is more important to you than that your page still looks good and is readable on a mobile device without lots of resizing and dragging.
What happens more often though, is that when authors have access to tables they tend to use them for page layout as well … which of course breaks all their pages for mobile devices. Using tables should be a conscious and knowledgeable choice when and where an actual table is the best choice.
I suggest it be an option. We are moving into the ability for both authors and groups to have options. Adding a table button to one’s RTE can be a choice one can obtain after reading an article on proper use of tables in a mobile friendly environment for instance. Or it could be turned on for a group, by the group manager, when it is known that the group is not worried about how their stuff displays on other devices, it’s not their focus.

i’m wondering if an item with a table on a mobile devise could be shown just as small view of a larger fixed sized object that the browser could navigate around … left, right .. up, down … zoom in, zoom out … with their fingers. Why is that a problem? Is that not just like looking at a map? … done all the time on mobile.

Some tables can. Problem is that table designers can do all kinds of things, fix cell widths, and other things, that interfere with this. I was playing around with this a bit today, but coming up with a reliable algorithm that can detect what a designer did and compensate for it is not so easy … rather a project in itself. Doable, but not a quick fix.
If people only made tables with our built in table maker, it would be easier. But they can copy and paste them from anywhere … so there is no controlling what you are going to be given ahead of time.

yes but we are not talking about what any web designer can do … but rather what we allow them to do with our rte. since we can specify the limitations there, can we not control that situation?

I guess you didn’t read the last sentence … which happens more often than not. Probably just should not write them I guess.

okay, but don’t we need the system to curate what can be dragged into our items? i know that is not easy, but is it not absolutely necessary anywhere? i mean we don’t want to let people drag malignant scripts and styles that totally destroy the item. Can’t we just strip all styles from dragged tables?

It’s the exact same problem if you handle it in the editor or in the page with jQuery. If you strip all the styles the table can look like shit … and often not what they copied. It’s better as it is than like that, already tried it. I think it’s possible to do an intelligent restyleing … it’s just probably a day’s project for the core plugin and then tweaking for time as new tables are encountered. What we have now is the best quick fix compromise.

okay. we should probably put it on the list of fbi-2 (or even fbi-3) features to
. what we are doing now works for my immediate purposes.
