Feed Reader

About: fastblogit common river

News reader shows the feed is ~ 51 minutes behind your own news.
the 2nd line has an invalid link to Fastblogit Faq On Feeds  but it works anyway – just an observation.  Don’t know whether the reader is accurate or not. Using http://feedreader.com/online/#/reader/category/318154/

The feed lives in it’s own folder and I haven’t changed anything in there … so any issues are likely old. I guess you only have this so that other news sites can use it to get information? I don’t know of anyone who actually uses a feed reader in this day and age. But I do use the feed sometimes at my blog sites to transfer information around … and people could use a feed notification site to get email updates when something changes … if that is reliable in the feed generation here.

So you seeing this “News reader shows the feed is ~ 51 minutes behind your own news.” from the thrid party site http://feedreader.com.   Our  feed is generated directly out of our data base and should be fairly accurate with the times on other places on the site.  But if you are reading our feed via that third party,  well who knows how often they pool us … maybe just once an hour.

Also what time zone they are in and if the dates in your feed data are in GMT format so that they travel correctly or not.

Yep. I would just build a homepage, view of the top of the river, and an index into the most active groups since the last visit (or 24 hrs). Then each group would just be the last most active posts in that group and each post would be just post content … no tags or comments or expanded links or especially editing or control links.

Well it is fairly unreadable as it is so am using feedreader.com . The first article in the list was 51 minutes behind by their formatted listing.  I mainly blogged because of the error in the link on the 2nd line; whether that makes any difference or not who knows?  I did notice that the last time i pushed the feed button that the resulting pile did have a current time near the top of it. yes

ok that error to the faq feeds is probably something that i should look into when i get a tuit …. thanks for catching it.   obviously this is a low priority problem and may be even a legacy … personally i haven’t used feeds for years.

I wonder if it has anything to do with google site search coverage or whether google gets their stuff from the fastblogit river.pondering
seth@fbi 2015-12-30 14:45:13 [item 19436#40024]
i wish it was that easy … then we could really control what google indexes … but unfortunately i doubt that Google even looks at this feed.   but finding out how we can better control Google’s indexing is going to be part of our “reach out”  … anything you find out there which we can use is greatly appreciated.  caution though,  many SEO people will try to sell us the idea that they know how to get us like totally indexed … few if any of them really know what is going down.

Why not just detect bots and send them whatever cooked content you want … similar to the feed? Then you can control what they get and more importantly, give them stuff that has much lower impact on the system … simpler queries and contained content that doesn’t have them crawling the entire SQL database every time they visit.

i didn't know that you could control a bot’s search algorithm … tricky business …
nathan@fbi 2015-12-30 15:12:24 [item 19436#40029]
Not tricky at all. You can know it is a bot, that is easy. Then you can simply send it whatever pages you want it to traverse with whatever actual links in it that are useful for it to follow, and not all the links that are not useful like editing gadgets and stuff which it is now trying to traverse. It would still be browsable pages, just simpler and more relevant to the bot. That is not controlling the search, it is simply building a website for the bot that is what you want the bot to get … not any more difficult that building the RSS feed … in fact easier because it would still be html pages, not RSS speak. You could throw a switch and browse them yourself to see what the bot’s are seeing today.
