yep ! the question is where is there a systems we can use to actually solve [title the trans domain identity $wish] ? That is the wish that users establish their identity only once and yet are known on as many web sites as possible without needing to log into those websites and remember passwords for each.

i claim that these systems like openId do not even address that wish. they just substitute a url for a user name and have the trans domain systems try to eliminate the need to remember their passwords. personally i dont see how that helps the user all that much.

IMHO an identity system will have to be a web service hinted at [here google Federated Identity management] .
The service will manage the verification of email address and levels of security needed to access various parts of the website & it's privileges.  Web services are not all that easy to write.

...hmm ... ... that buzz word "federated identity" cropped up in discussions in the group kabal as a thing that Google was attempting to do.  I have not had the time to study this proposal but if one just validates an email address as belonging to a real person then, while it is true that email address works out to be a fine user name,  it stil does not protect someone from using that email address to login to some group.  I fail to see how this would solve the [title the trans domain identity $wish].
