I don't think "it snowed in renton today" is a meme. (;-))uri http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meme may help. If "snowing in renton today" implied that it might snow everywhere or that an Ice Age was coming then it might be a meme - let's start the rumor! (It snowed in Arvada last night - pictures later).  I think Global Warming is a meme propagated by the left.

While your picture got spread - i missed the part about a meme going somewhere.

Seth says
what got propogated was the meme: "it snowed in renton today"

Seth says
also picked up by the new gada.be meta search, but of course that was just because i posted at flickr.  point is that places like flickr, and del.icio.us have far more traffic and posting to them will propogate something far faster than just posting here.  i do both when i can, then in the process am doing pr for fastblogit.

Well you could be right.  It's a matter of definition and, using the Wikipedia article, one could interpert a meme either as a any bit of knowledge (Dawkins: "a unit of imitation")  or as a unit of "social evolution" requireing that it have ability to transform.  Certainly a bit of knowledge as trivial as "it snowed in Renton today" will not transorm the culture.

My focus here was to point out that knowledge could be spread by posting to folksonomy places like del.icio.us and flickr.  Consequently when i want to spread a piece of knowledge, i will post it to one of those places.  That is the real meme here.  Folksonomy is not merely to organize our marks, but to spread them.

Eventually we would hope to have FastBlogIt the "goto" place for folksonomy! (;-))

The idea of a meme is similar to a gene in that it has some property (in this case mental) that enhances survival ; or the propagator believes enhances survival. It is that property that causes it's propagation.  There are a lot of memes in the news: news itself is a meme. It enhances our survival (or so it is believed) to know about dangers, crime etc. This meme is one of the strongest memes there is and that is probably why the meme "If it bleeds it leads" in the news survives in a so-called enlightened age.  Folksonomy doesn't seem to have a corresponding meme yet. The desire to reach out and touch someone is not nearly as strong as fear, paranoia of the government and the like.

Definitely

However, there is a distinction, not only between what fastblogit is today (not very well known),  and what it may be destined to become.  Places like del.icio.us and Technocrati are folksonomy clearing houses.  They have become utilities for the web, like the Google search engine, but in being those utilities, they do not offer any content of their own.  Fastblogit domains, have folksonomy embedded and integrated right in the fabric of the content.  As such they do not provide a utility for the larger web, rather they just converse with that utility.

How about "the ability to find what you are looking for" as a meme for survival?  The more we develop our skill at tagging, the more others do as well, the more our taggings are shared, the better we will be at finding the things that we are looking for.   Right now i am using the live tag search at fastblogit as an enhansement for my failing memory.  Now i can find things almost instantaly that i know are there, but have forgotten the details about.

"The ability to find what you are looking for" may or not reside in the technology OR in tagging. - Google is pretty good at it. When it fails it is usually because what I am looking for is not published on the internet & nobody who knows where what I am looking for is has published about it. (sorry about the pronouns).

Great!  Now we need to focus upon enhancing that faculty 1000 fold & we will be a success! I think that managing the tag cloud somewhat like the visual thesaurus would help. Both suggesting tags and finding what has been tagged need to be enhanced.  Unfortunately I don't exactly share your enthusiasm yet that blogs are going to point to the things that I am looking for, yet
Well, me thinks that the technology we have right now is quite adequate for the degree to which we have learned to tag.  You will not automatically get dramatically better results by enhansing the technology, rather you will get dramatic results by doing more tagging and using the taggings of others.  How many times have you clicked the hyperlink to delicious or flicker or Technocrati from a fastblogit tag room and discovered something that you were looking for?  How often have you found an item at fastblogit that you were looking for based upon your taggings or the taggings of others?  When you fail to find that which you are looking for, it does not necessarily mean that the technology is deficient, it may mean that your use of it has yet to be adequately honed.

Google works well in many cases, but it still fails in many cases.  Perhaps your expectations are less than mine, but many of the things that i want to find are not findable through Google, even if i end up searching deep in their never ending lists.  Some of them might be cases where there is not any mark of them on the Internet yet,  but in many i know that there are marks, but  i simply do not  know the key words to find them,  or perhaps the people who are making those waves are not marking them for me to find.   Social tagging, when learned by our culture, will provide the means to find these exotica.  Then when we can find these exotica, we might just flash that there was much more out there happening in our exact areas of interest, that we ever imagined.

The challenge in my mind is that I have found what I am looking for many times with Google and have yet to find anything with tagging except in FastBlogIt which is where I am involved.

fair enouth.  finding things via taggings feel different than finding things via google searches.  it is more of a social thing, than a web page finding.

Finding something I want has that feeling expressed in the word eureka see uri http://dictionary.reference.com/search?r=2&q=eureka- it is more or less the same every time it occurs.

BTW - how has tagging increased your ability to locate a good RTE ? If not, why not ? Would you find one better in Google Groups ?

to RTE UI by hedgerwang ... and 17 other people ... on 2005-11-22 ... copy
which is pretty good conformation that i am on the right track
