Short memorable URLs are not to be depreciated

People’s know that a specific thing is on the web by knowing it’s name.  These names appear frequently on stationary, on signs, in store windows, on trucks, on TV, and are spoken person to person.  Then people go to the computer and type these names directly into their browser.   For this to happen the names must be short and memorable.  But in the future we won’t even do that … no we will just say something like “Go to thinking dot domains” and the computer based on the fact that we said “dot” inside a phrase will present us with that information.  So when we want to talk to or about a person we might say “show me a think dot club slash jimbo” and our computer will know quite what we are talking about.

There is no way that entry of short names into the computer should be depreciated in favor of UIDs which cannot be remembered and cannot be accurately spoken or typed.   Those are for computer to computer dialog only … not human to computer or computer to human.

you can do this now … ask Siri, “go to fast blog it dot com slash seth” … and she what she does.

this is what appeared on my screen

As far as Seri goes, when she is asked to come here it should go to some manner of search. That would be more useful than trying to devise url’s so that they match up with what people say to Seri … which is probably not what you would say for each other person.

I don’t know how to do that now that group names are the default. In a system I would design to be Seri friendly, default url’s would end up in special search rooms targeted by the domain wizard to best represent what is useful at that domain given the word or words supplied. It may or may not be people at the domain. It all depends on what the domain is about.

i think you missed the point.  we don’t need to contrive this.  this is what is already happening.  Siri understands and goes where  we intend just based upon us calling a duck a “duck” instead of a number.  It probably works even better on google because that chick is already smarter.   Alexa just goes “i don’t know how to answer the question that i heard”.

I get the point Seth, and I am seeing it down the road, better. I see that a site Seri-ized interface is on it’s way. More and more new sites will start mapping their url structure to match up with Seri easily and get the most relevant content back to the asker …which will be different content than that which people would have typed in … using Seri is a different context.

? sure

but we don’t just do it for “Siri” … not that you meant that we would.  This is the whole semantic web that was supposed to create data about the web so that the web could become smarter.  Then some developers zigged and others zagged and they never really got their shit together to make it really work.  We got micro formats … and Google is doing their own thing internally … and Siri is probably doing stuff too … everybody wants webdesigners to put the meta data in their pages to identify stuff just for their peculair sites.  So now we got pretty much total chaos and i guess kind of just some kind of natural language search within tags.   Knowing what markup to put in the page and knowing who’s namespace and ontology to target is a whole industry now … they call it seo.   … if you can intuit the best strategy there for some particular happening now, kudos indeed, me i give up.

Yea, it’s just not semantic. It’s intuitive. I don’t like semantics for this kind of stuff anyway. My brain knows the right scramble of words to type into google so that I get exactly what I am looking for more than 9 out of 10 times in the top 5 results. Just need to distil that out into a system.

.. yep nothing magical just comes with practice – the more you search the more you get what google or some other search tool will give you back – it took some work tracking down the Prosperos.

yes and i hasten to add that it is not just Thorian’s  intuition that gets him such excellent results at Google … we are are getting those same excellent results … er, why? … well just because Google has been evolving their search algorithms and data to yield that result based upon the nature of language itself.

… & the incentive of capitalism … laughing what gets searched for ends up in facebook adz & other sites selling you some.

I would not say the properties, that just gets you back to semantics, more word stuff. I would say that searches are getting better because google is noticing what people click on, how long they stay there, and if they come back and search again for something similar, to adjust the search top items to be what people stay on the most. Which is not semantics at all, it’s imperical design. When I worked on http://so.cl at Microsoft, that’s exactly what we did too … so.cl is microsofts social search experiment and where I worked my last 1.5 year term there.
seth of group seth 2016-02-13 09:07:39 [item 19940#45448]
?  … see so.cl.   so, did it work?
Thorin of group da 2016-02-13 09:18:20 [item 19940#45452]
It did what it was designed to do. The site is still there apparently. I was never interested in the social aspect of sharing my searches so I never went there since I stopped work on it. They wanted it to be like FB based on searches … and have everyone use it for their primary searches. Since I haven’t heard about it replacing google or bing or facebook, it is probably not the success they wanted it to be. What it is now and who uses it, I don’t know.

don’t fork this thread!

if you follow propoganda you get to the river tags and url http://www.fastblogit.com/tags/propoganda

from there we can navigate back to the fbi tag room http://www.fastblogit.com/fbi/tags/propoganda which of course is blank because nobody tagged anything there into propaganda.

but i am looking for a thought by chomsky  which i must have tagged with propaganda.  so i will substitute my room in the url http://www.fastblogit.com/seth/tags/propoganda

Maybe or just like politics – representation is in the eye of the politician for one purpose or another.

well yes yes,   representation is in the eye of everybody who sees the representation.  everybody has their purpose or another.

Yep, munged-away back into the pile – will someone in some other universe find the rose
seth of group seth 2016-02-13 09:29:32 [item 19940#45456]
do you mean in a universe where politicians are distrusted and not to be believed ?  … as in propoganda
Mark of group mark 2016-02-13 09:44:44 [item 19940#45457]
nope – that’s NOT a roserose laughing – still confused by the (+)
seth of group seth 2016-02-13 09:50:01 [item 19940#45458]
ok i give up … to which “rose” did you refer?
Mark of group mark 2016-02-13 10:01:43 [item 19940#45460]
If you don’t know the difference between a rose & a manure pile maybe first step is to go have a direct experience & jump into the manure pile .
seth of group seth 2016-02-13 10:10:37 [item 19940#45461]
come on now …. i know the difference relative to myself … you should certainly expect that.  in this case the “munged pile of words” and the “rose” are inside your mind, not mine.   how am i to be expected to know it, if you don’t tell me?  incidentally there is not right here, and there is no wrong here … in my mind here just the absence of that to which this particular use of “rose” refers.   or are we just dealing here with vibrational transactions?  … which is neither right or wrong either … i was just curious which one it was.  If it is just a ego vibrational transaction, well then no need to bother to find any actual reference.  follow the bouncing ball … kind of fun if you are into it.
Mark of group mark 2016-02-13 10:15:52 [item 19940#45462]
You missed my point so long ago that even the clue “munged into the manure pile” is lost on you.
