A marketing idea for thinking domains

idea  Getting the install for a thinking domain on the cPanel hosting companies give every new domain which they host is the ideal distribution system for our enterprise.   Then the hosting company collects from our customer and sends the revenue to us.  All we need to do is to convince hosting companies to put us on the cPanels.

Okay. Sounds good in general. I will assume you mean cpanel’s generically because cPanel is only used about 15% compared to other hosting software.

Packaging a system for a distributed install like that is quite a lot of work. I have looked into it before. Not only the packaging itself, which is not exactly the same for each hosting panel model, but also the rigorous testing and quality assurance they require in order to include something. A team could do it in a reasonable amount of time. I don’t think I could in less than about 6 months alone.

And after that, you would need to convince them … which usually requires the system to be popular enough. They don’t tend to include start up applications, only well known ones. But that can vary depending on how good a selling manifester you are!

Quite frankly. Packaging the system as a “git” install and letting people “one step” install it themselves at any of the sites that support git installs (heroku is only one and they are growing fast) is probably a much faster path and doesn’t require any special packaging or testing, just your word on that it works.

The cpanl version of Wordpress is just a big harness around that process that keeps track of all your installs and allows you to do maintenance on them and delete them.

was that the thing i was got roped into paying $5/month for?
Poe of group da 2016-03-02 07:33:41 [item 20234#47559]
Yes. It would have been if they had actually put it in for you. I’ve used it at other hosts that have it in cPanel, like godaddy for instance.
i think it was just something that i clicked into my cPanel which went to a shopping cart where i had to authorize the monthly pavement.  i did it because i wanted to be able to install wordpressess super easily.

what does wordpress.org use?
Poe of group da 2016-03-02 07:27:22 [item 20234#47553]
Wordpress is it’s own custom install. You put in the installer then hit it with a web browser and follow the prompts which download and install the rest. Which is exactly what we have so far too!

i’m going to go see how easy it is for me to install a wordpress.org in rentonfoodcoop.com ….

in the context of a thinking domains business plan, i think it is all about the level of expertise of the person charged with getting the thing done ← they are out customers.  thinking domains can give abilities to people who, up to now, have had no such abilities.  its could be like when the personal computer came out and suddenly millions of people had the capabilities which had been reserved only to large corporations and governments.

Okay. TD’s are much simpler to manage than Wordpress. That’s a true plus. Wordpress has far more ability and gazillions of add on plugins.

The wordpress install requires you to create a database and user, exactly the way my install that you did does. Just so you know what it is when you get to it. inmotion will not allow software to do that on it’s own.

Okay cool. It is a tad bit easier, but not that much. Surely not worth $5 a month.
yes i know … it was a bad click crying … ended up running for ~ 2 years at $5/month and i never used it.

how do they lock that out?
Poe of group da 2016-03-02 07:54:01 [item 20234#47571]
They pre-configure mysql database software to only allow adding and removing databases by the cPanel software itself. It is compiled into their own custom version of mysql.

It is possible to compile our own mysql, but then we would have to duplicate all the other managment software and everything else and it wouldn’t work with cPanel.

any clue as to why inmotion did it that way?   You know, you or I could call them and get a better feel of how they intend enterprises like us to operate there.  I can give you the secret codes as to how to talk to them.
Poe of group da 2016-03-02 08:03:38 [item 20234#47578]
Yes. It is very commonly done with this kind of hosting model. They even say it right up front on the screen that you have to jump hoops through to get “root” access. It simplifies their ability to support you. They do lots of things to make their support model easier and warn you if you go outside of that.

cPanel itself actually does this mysql thing. Inmotion simply inherits it by choosing to use cPanel. But they do so to make their job, and costs, less.

They will let you do anything you want … but if you go outside their model you are on your own, so they say, and you have to do it all yourself without the help of cPanel etc.
okay … like we already discussed … we have till ~ December to grow out of their box.

p.s. Heroku and those like it use a completely different hosting model. One that has been more popular for a while and more flexible and expandable and charges by use too. The model inmotion uses is fairly old, back from the early 2000’s.

this thought should probably be moved.   normally i would have thunk it in group niche but nathan seems to have coped an aversion to that goup … then too it could go in group fbi … but that group is more technical.   ineviatably it should be in http://thinking.domains but that domain has yet to open.   So in the meanwhile where should we think about thinking domains business matters?
Poe of group da 2016-03-02 08:17:20 [item 20234#47588]
I’m fine with niche, used it myself a few times. I just like to play with the name duplicity.
