ok wizzard, i’ll bite, how do i get a better name?

Annonymous says

hey how can i be anonymous and got to put in my last name?

not sure … i wold have to do it again … but these stand out stark in my memory
2016-03-12 04:14:31 [item 20444#48971]
so this actually worked kind of okay … some clumsyness left
2016-03-12 04:15:16 [item 20444#48972]
The last name require was just a missed bug.
What else?
What else?
inability of a newbe to know how see her profile closed – hence when her changes have taken place.
- lack of the wizzards ability to name an unnamed group – that needs to existe or it cannot even be talked about in the group doc or welcome letter
- lack of clarity as to how the newbe’s group acquires her intended title
- …
- … do not fork
Si says
Nope.
2016-03-12 05:08:38 [item 20444#48981]
has it changed enough on the other aspects that i should go try it again?
Holmes says
As Forest Gump said quite well, “stupid is as stupid does”. Actually it was his mom who said it first, but it always applies wherever someone says something is stupid.
2016-03-12 05:04:22 [item 20444#48978]
and if i had no “aka”, i would never put my name in parenthesis.
2016-03-12 05:05:56 [item 20444#48979]
I said, already fixed.
and yes, aka is an alternative for parentheses, but not as nice.

well i dont’t like the paranthesis … i will see eventually how you have used them

2016-03-12 05:11:55 [item 20444#48984]
Facebook and G+ use them. I guess you just don’t like what people do

2016-03-12 05:13:51 [item 20444#48986]
maybe … don’t remember seeing that particular usage there.
2016-03-12 05:19:34 [item 20444#48988]
You can look at my own FB homepage for instance. (nathan) is in parentheses. (Because I got d’Argagnan Evergreen Barbosa legacy in as my full name and nathan is my alias). They do the parens on aliases like most places that support aliases do. Never seen aka used on the web yet, only on paper. Sounds like bill the cat acking up a fur ball!

2016-03-12 05:28:45 [item 20444#48991]
okay … as long as our usage does not look stupid, this will work.

Seth says
?
2016-03-12 05:08:50 [item 20444#48982]
This is the result. Works great
if (usr.firstname && usr.lastname && usr.nickname.toLowerCase() !== usr.firstname.toLowerCase())
$('.fullname-show', $th).html(usr.firstname + ' ' + usr.lastname + ' (' + usr.nickname + ')');
else if (usr.firstname && usr.lastname && usr.nickname.toLowerCase() === usr.firstname.toLowerCase())
$('.fullname-show', $th).html(usr.firstname + ' ' + usr.lastname);
else if (usr.firstname && usr.nickname.toLowerCase() !== usr.firstname.toLowerCase())
$('.fullname-show', $th).html(usr.firstname + ' (' + usr.nickname + ')');
else if (usr.lastname && usr.nickname)
$('.fullname-show', $th).html(usr.lastname + ' (' + usr.nickname + ')');
else
$('.fullname-show', $th).html(usr.nickname);
Notice that when nickname is by itself, it is shown without parens.

hmmm …. thanks
nifty markdown
… we ever going get that on the RTE ?

nifty markdown

2016-03-12 05:16:32 [item 20444#48987]
I would have to make a custom menu item for it and add it to the RTE. It’s the standard pattern for showing code anywhere, and it display’s and edits ok in the RTE, but for some reason the RTE designers did not see fit to provide it in the standard set on the menus. They provided some other weird stuff instead. They probably were not coders!

Holmes says

the ( ) make this clumsy … especially in the case where a geek does not want their name shown … hence they do not give it.
I suggest just separating them with a “—“ only if both are present.They are identical. Just because you don’t remember seeing both at this moment does not mean they both don’t exist and are identical forms. They are. And the paren version is the one prevalent on the web and doesn’t make you cough.

already fixed.
also:
hyphens have another meaning in names, combining name parts or joint last names for instance
alternate names are always in parentheses, not hyphens
in english anyway.

well i am not sure i agree with your experiences with English – in my 70+ years i do not remember seeing that used that way very often at all. More likely, in English is would be stated as “Jerkoff aka Annonymous” which to me is a clear unambiguous English term.
why not disclose the entire logic here explicit rather than having to discover it in pieces. For example would prevent my profile being shown as “Seth Russell (seth)” … what is the logic that prevents that kind of stupidity.

bear in mind this is a person stating their names to the world – not somebody else writing about two different terms for the same thing. the usage is different (not the same thing). For example i would never say I am Seth Russell (Bozo Faust). I would say instead, I am Seth Russell aka Bozo Faust. ← far less ambiguous.
Seth says
well we are both seeing out of our own experience as well as the experience of those to whom we carefully listen. there is no difference between us in that regard.

You know the system has never yet actually asked this person what they want to be the name of their profile group. We hare here switching around (back and forth) making it what we presume that that may like. We tried “First.Last” … currently for a newbie iit is a nmber … on fbi1 it used to be just a simple name that they started like.
At some point in the process we should have an input box … explicitidly described … that ask the person themselve to make up a name for their profile group. At that time the system must approve the usage (no collisions) and perhaps even the Wizzard may game their ability. But in any case this is a data that we should name and start talking about specificially. We should not imply it from other data. I think us trying to imply that for other data and make that up is one of the reasons we keep zigging and zagging around with this.

First things first. No zigging here, been a straight path since all the way back 2 months ago when it was decided to have identified users. I had to plot a course though some less traveled lands due to the the special needs of (some) of the travelers, but the course has been well known and quite true the whole way.
Next up on the plotted map is permanence management.

well yes … permance management starts with the system asking what the person wants to be the name of their profile group.

2016-03-12 05:34:58 [item 20444#48995]
also … please note … that the name of the profile group (author’s choice) … goes along with the title of their profile group (also author’s choice). Perhaps those two things sould happen the same time and in the same context. Huh?
2016-03-12 05:38:12 [item 20444#48997]
LOL … not so well thought out. Your thinking like Seth again, not a true blond.

2016-03-12 05:44:54 [item 20444#48999]
huh? Yes i am thinking as seth. See my name. The title of a page is not the url of a page (exclusive of its domain location)… that is a fact. The title of a page is supposed to be a very human readable description of what the page is. The short name of the page for purposes of the identification are not the same thing and never can be. It is up to the author (and really nobody else) to chose both. I have intentionally choseen mine. “seth” is the name of the URL (sans domanin location) … and “My Thoughts” is title of that spot. Blond girls will probably not realize all of that. It should be our intention to clarify it for them … and not contribute to their confusion.
2016-03-12 05:51:45 [item 20444#49000]
Well, you may not be blond. But at the moment you are only seeing though the eyes of the experience in front of you, not through the eyes of thousands or millions at the same time. It’s that “me me me” thing that gets blonds called blonds.

Holmes says
Take note of your surroundings … even as you were deep in a diatribe about your experience, the caravan has been in motion and the scenery has been changing.

Not exactly. As with all things on this journey, that is like jumping down the nearest rabbit hole just because you saw a rabbit go in it. Wonderland is a much bigger place with many doors ...
2016-03-12 05:54:40 [item 20444#49001]
well that just sounds like you want to keep playing this ziggy zaggy gamey against me on this namings … rather than let it pop now so that we can move on to more interesting things. don’t you want to go over to new hamshire very soon with this working in a stable state for both of us?
2016-03-12 05:58:13 [item 20444#49002]
Yep. You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make them drink. I have mapped a journey where all the horses will stay alive and not die on me before we get to the end. It may be taking longer, but it will get to the end with all members of the party well and fit.

2016-03-12 06:01:12 [item 20444#49004]
well great … let us get on with this journey → → →

well strange you say that because not only did i change it, but it got used when Geek signed up … see http://www.fastblogit.com/item/20443

great … should i go be a new blond girl again now?
2016-03-12 06:09:03 [item 20444#49007]
Nope. Not for this anyhow. I’ll put out a bulletin when it’s ready as I usually do.
But if you want to tweak the welcome screens you are welcome to. Thought you said you changed the heart, but I am still seeing it, for instance.

as to the profile template … well not sure how to change that untill we stop zigging around with the namings.
