Peter Ralston's attitude twards representations ...

3: 5 Accepting people regardless of their beliefs is not the same as validating whatever organized system they may follow. Certainly people can believe whatever they want— they tend to in any case— but that doesn’t make the belief true. As a matter of fact, when it comes to absolutes, no belief can be true. It’s possible to have a relatively valid belief in regard to some objective probability; in a conditional world, even a guess may turn out to be more or less correct. But absolutes are absolute, existing outside any context, and so they can’t be represented by any kind of formulation. Remember that it is the job of religion to invite you to believe in some representation, an activity that moves you in the opposite direction of pursuing a direct-consciousness. This is not merely an opinion, but a fact based on the nature of what we refer to as “the Absolute.” Because absolutes are neither conditional nor conceivable, it is not possible to have a belief that in any way matches or represents Absolute truth. By substituting faith for the truth, we’ve abdicated our souls not saved them. 13: 6 It is the business of religions to peddle the notion that they possess knowledge of absolutes. Without this claim, all the dogma and traditions they disseminate would be seen for what they are: just made-up fantasies, superstitions, and rituals that certain people espouse for various reasons. They may have good reasons and produce some positive results in society, but the unnoticed cost is still too high. What creates the most mischief is that each religion lays claim to absolute knowledge, which is then used to add validity to its specific belief system, as well as credibility to its intercessors.

I thought Peter’s passage here was important enought to snip from the jaws of another context.

By in large i can heartily agree … except there is one assumption (belief) embedded in his truth here that me thinks needs to be teased out … then people can choose it or not …

So the assumption here is that there is a “direct-consciousness” which gives a person the ability to believe an Absolute Truth totally without devise of representation.

Me, I do not believe such an assumption.  I think we can always get closer and closer, more and more inclusive of wider and wider contexts, … i call that better truth … but can we go all the way? … i believe not.
You used a lot of belief in your rebuttal. PR negated believing absolutes.  You & I have been jousting over “direct experiences” for a very long time.  PR has shown that it is neither direct nor experience but closer to grok & the closest many get to one is when they contemplate exactly –  who am I ? No description works. No wallaby is close. No qualia is sufficient . & yet once groked you have a direct experience & can at least know who came into a room when you do. laughing … (& who might leave through the asshole of death when you do!) That residue left over in memory fades into null pointers quickly. GW has said that spiritual experiences are recreated each time & don’t get remembered.
