I think we underestimate the degree to which our individual lives are just a maze of habits.  Then when we reflect on our culture, we are prone to ignore how it is a collection of our individual habits and the habits of our ancestors and the habits imposed from a long history.  Habits are good, they allow us to survive.  But somtimes i think our lives, which are always struggling to transcend the mundane, are a struggle against our habits and the habits of our collective history.
