Microsoft Team RSS Blog : Icons: still orange

Maybe we should use this to represent our feeds too ?

Now we have a site that specializes in custom feed icons

If buzz on the blogoshpere is any measure of importance, then this sure is a good idea

... it gets four stars from me

Doesn't someone need to know whether it is RSS or Atom or some other format of feed for browsing the "feed" (not all browsers can read all feeds).
Essentially the answer to your question is "no, they do not need to know".  People do not need to know which feed is being produced ... only that a feed is being produced, and where it is.  Almost without exception the software that reads the feed knows how to read all of the popular variations.

Looks like what i first blogged about here
is now finally starting to happen with this
new icon .  Check out this post by Micro Persuasion

WOW! some people finally agreed on the shape & color of a button for RSS

I finally found where FireFox 1.5 moved their feeds icon

Seth says
you must mean this which is available here

The orange buttons work and hyperlink to the url of the feed. The feeds work in almost all aggregators. If you click the orange button you will prolly get a screen that shows you an error. Everything is working fine. You should put the $bug tag on the feed generation, and not on the orange button.

Hmmmm...I haven't found one that works yet
They "work", there are just some XHTML errors in the feeds.  But the feeds still work in almost any aggregator that you are using.
We must have a wholly different idea about what the term "works" means - is that a folksonomy kind of thing?

Great Work :)  Hopefully everybody will start using this icon and stat talking about "feeds" rather than  "RSS".

Now what we really do need is a transparent gif.  Any chances of getting one?

Wow! the feed was up in the control panel for a second & then disappeard (;-))
Where there is a feed for a room, it should always now appear.  I was working in this area a short time ago when you made your observation.  Currently the only room types that have feeds are group rooms ... so you will see the feed icon in group mark and group seth and group winnie etc.

Mark de LA says
Why not use the blue icon instead of the orange icon here ?

I think this is a case where the practical will trump the aesthetic.   We want this to be recognized and we want to help people to start recognizing it.  This button is just now starting to get propogated all over the net.   Making color variations in it at this time works against that.  Since this is something that wants to happen, there would be nothing that the  would do to get in its way.  In any case likes the look of the orange button in the navigation panel, but i am not happy with it's placement yet or it's exact size.

Of course some people dance to a different drummer ...

Like i said, Dave Winer dances to a different drummer .  When he should be promoting the new feed button to facilitate newbes learning about how the blogosphere works, instead he continues to promote his old crappy XML buttons that are the source of the confusion in the beginning.  Dave, get your head out of your ass

rmiug mentioned the new button also!

Where is your eDoc to the feeds ? One thing that might need updating in it is the new feeds icon, see Feed Icons and of course my tag room feeds, icons. This is a really important point to get out there in the blogosphere. If we can get more and more blogs to display feeds with this icon, and start calling this stuff that flows in the blogosphere ?feeds?, rather than the other geeky terms, we will have gone a long way to clarify what is happening for the newbie.

Mark de LA says
feeds may ruin the strategy of advertizement we have by bypassing the blog adv banner.
