I need the function to store pictures without showing them

I need to use the RTE to store a picture but not display it & use a link to refer to it because the picture might be large or not the main idea in a paragraph.

I don't think a newbie can figure out your workaround.
It might just be a matter of documenting.  It actually can be done all in one operation.
  1. upload a picture to the rte box as usual
  2. select the image in the rte box
  3. in FF, right click and select copy image location
  4. delete the image
  5. type some anchor text ... here
  6. select the anchor test
  7. press the link button
  8. paste the url into the box

yes, I figured that out. Would like a more direct way.
I'm going to tag this "bell and whistle".  There is no percentage in complicating otherwise simple protocols with something that is quite so unlikely and for which there is such an easy workaround.  If you want it easier, then use FTP.

I.E. I want to store a picture (or some other valid file) on the fastblogit website and use the link to it in an item.

you have than ability now. Just upload the picture to an item and, then delete the item. Before you do, discover the url of the image by right click and copy image location.
