allow authors to sell access to items

This is not that difficult to do.  Provide an option when posting any item to input an access price.  Perhaps there would be two prices, one if you are a member of the group, and another if you are not.  Doing that would force the item private, but would display a buy button to purchase a one time read of the item.  The client's account would be debited and the author's account would be credited by that amount (less our squeeze) should a client click the button.

As far as #1 goes, I sure there are plenty of people in the blogosphere who think their shit is worth something.
I'm sure thare are, but they don't help.  What we need are people that are willing to shell out $10-$20 dollars on the if come that they will see something interesting enough on the site to pay .02 for.  The question is, if we had the system in place, would people post interesting things here on the if-come that customers would buy.

sounds good - need a pay system of course & probably the ID thingy.

... bear in mind that if nobody buys, we make no money on the scheme.

this is very similar to the clickshop.com/library project back pre 1998.  I think i still got the $2 that i made

well what we need ... in rough order of priority is:
  1. people posting things here that are worth money (even pennies)
  2. a merchant account (could use speak to me temporarily)
  3. about 2 days programming
2 and 3 are relatively easy, 1 is the hard part.

The way i would do it is to have people open an account for a fixed amount of money ... say $10 to $20.  Then when you make an item private you express a number in pennies which you would accept to allow someone with an account access to the item.  The transaction is a straight forward credit to you and debit the access account ... less our squeeze, of course.  I would accept pay pal, or credit cards to put money in your account.

Well Google decided this was a good idea ...

I know that podcasting is very new, and even audiobooks quite new.
Audiobooks are selling (even on the iTunes site) for good money, whilst
    podcasts are all free.

Fair enough if the content is quite different. However, if you put
together a podcast, or series of podcasts that teach something useful -
how to play the trumpet or write a good dashboard widget, say -
wouldn't it be nice to be able to sell the course?

My idea would be to have an introduction that is free and covers the
topic briefly to give an idea of your style, pace and method. This
might be enough for many. If they like it, however, they could then pay
to subscribe to the rest of the podcasts/chapters/installments.

At the moment, it would be necessary to write an audiobook to do this.
However, most audiobooks are made from existing published books. I'd
like to produce a new book, entirely in audio to teach a subject (that
I teach already) and put it out there for people to buy.

    Is this possible?

Yes.  There was some discussion of this on my blog  see http://fastblogit.com/permalink/?item=2359 .   Essentially if you have a blog where you can control the access of items  pointing to the mp3 files of the "podcasts" and have a buy button on the introductory or teaser items, then you can easily sell audio books.   If anyone is interested in actually doing this, i will be glad to take the small steps that are necessary to get from here to there.
