Virtue etymologically derives from the Latin vir which simply means man. Such is presumably inclusive of woman as well to the extent of sharing the notion of human. I have scanned the interesting pieces of the book. Note the printing uses what looks like an f but is really an s . Note also that is the so called John Norris translation. The binding is very, very good. There is some fraying on the outside spine. Instead of gilding the edges are yellow stained. On the inside of the board paper at the bottom in unphotographable light very small print are the words bound by john winstanley manchester – nothing else on that page. This may put the binding date somewhere in the early 1800’s . There is a Dawson Bookshop sticker on the back inside cover which is probably where my father acquired it. There are a couple of dealer pencil markings insignificant.

BTW Aleister Crowley in his “new translation” in 53 pages (from the Warburg) prefaces:
Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.
The importance attached to the Golden Verses by the Pythagoreans was cardinal. Every disciple was made to memorize them, and to repeat them daily. They were esteemed a Compendium of the Master’s teaching.
The consideration of these facts induced me to conclude that the Verses must be in the nature of a Cryptogram, that the apparently commonplace phrases concealed a secret signification, a key to the Occult and Magical Doctrine and Practices of the Pythagoras.
& then he went on in 53 pages to unconceal a lot of the greek word meanings etc.
So far I can’t find this work on the Internet.

1. First worship the Immortal Gods, as they are established and ordained by the Law.

Yeah – Hierocles wrote a lot more than just the titles. In the above book & in Crowley’s interpretations there is more to be had. The keys to the kingdom of Virtue are not just in this list. Today if you did one of those “man in the street” interviews (seth you might do such wandering around the town as you sometimes do) and ask & collect the responses to what is virtue – how does it inform your existence? (you rephrase) .
Well i think it is fair to assume that all the answers to “what is virtue” will look like a giant hair ball.
