Experiments online

I don't quite understand the software that I am using to create this webpage, yet I am hoping to understand it better by using it.

I will post this and see if I achieve enlightenment.

I came here via a page on BurningBird.

Welcome to the community

There is some help under the question mark in the nav panel as well as the group about.  as this is a work in progress, it's a bit difficult to completely document it yet.

Let the know if you need any assistance, or have any bright of how to improve the experience.

Note that to put a header on your group, just click the "special usage as header" check box in the upper left hand side of the screen when you add an item.

An interesting dialogue ...

seth
: 06:54 yes we would definitely like to grow
Lawrence Krubner: 07:21 its a very interesting site
Lawrence Krubner: 07:22 I am fascinated with the way people read complicated visual environments - like this one. And I enjoy my own personal sesne of disorientation that comes over me when discovering a site like this.
Lawrence Krubner: 07:23 It is a bit like a video game where one has to navigate a maze. There are hidden treasures everywhere, but it takes effort to figure out how to read what one is seeing.
Lawrence Krubner: 07:23 I recall the first time I ever used a computer, the first time I ever used a Macintosh, and the first time I ever saw Windows on a PC.
Lawrence Krubner: 07:24 Always there is that sense of disorientation, followed by a period of exploration, and finally a sense of being at home, of understanding where things are, and where things have been placed.
Lawrence Krubner: 07:25 Nowadays I build online software, but I don't work on the graphical end of it. But I do wonder how overwhelming complicated our designs must appear to people when they first encounter them.
Lawrence Krubner: 07:36 Hey, if you feel like a bit of role reversal, would you please go check out a site I'm working on and tell me if you find it visually confusing? Whereas I can tell you exactly where I was confused by your site, perhaps you could tell me what is confusing
Lawrence Krubner: 07:37 about mine (designed by Darren Hoyt, who is a talented graphic designer, I only did the programming on this site). The site is www.accumulist.com
Winnie: 07:52 to...Lawrence Krubner...first impression is: although your text and background is a pretty color combo, the text in the light shades is hard to read on the Mac
Winnie: 07:55 secon take is I have no idea what you are promoting
Winnie: 07:55 second take is I have no idea what you are promoting
Lawrence Krubner: 07:58 Winnie, thanks. It's interesting how hard it is to figure out what a site is for, when you first discover it. I just went through that visiting this site, where it took me several minutes to figure out what, exactly, was going on here.
Lawrence Krubner: 08:00 In theory, accumulist will be a tag aggregator, but one more friendly to programmers than, say, Technorati, and one that gives others control over how their work shows up and is indexed.
Lawrence Krubner: 08:00 thankfully, I am not the graphic designer working on the site, as I don't envy him the difficulty of the task he faces. I'm really unclear how accumulist might easily and clearly indicated to a newcomer what the site is about.
Winnie: 08:01 This site is a very interactive site to communicate all kinds of ideas on differend levels . One can post pictures and data from either their computer or fron the net
Winnie: 08:03 one bring into the discussion visual or audio to make a point in the discussion
Winnie: 08:04 you can add links to your site or to other sites to add to the conversation
seth: 08:08 lawrence, accumulist is an innovative site ... it will take more study ... i bookmarked it, study later ... got to deal with the xbox craze going on in my livingroom
Lawrence Krubner: 08:11 seth, fastblogit looks to be a lot more innovative than accumulist. I mean that as a compliment, though it also means the task you face is harder than the one we face. Because we at least have the advantage of being able to point at something like Technor
Lawrence Krubner: 08:12 technorati and say "we're sorta like them"
Lawrence Krubner: 08:12 but you all will face a harder time, because you're site is so innovative.
Lawrence Krubner: 08:13 an open public chat room in real time with infinite rooms and a front page that groups everything by tags
Lawrence Krubner: 08:14 that's what I've gotten so far, at least. It seems like a complicated site, with the possibility for a lot of internal references and cross references.
Lawrence Krubner: 08:14 a few suggestions: the focus on this page should move to the input box (in which I'm typing) when the page loads. Its tiresome to move the mouse and click in this box every time the page loads
Lawrence Krubner: 08:15 it would be good if this chat refreshed in real time.
Winnie: 08:15 Yes many possibilities You can even have your own room and privat rooms if you like :)
Lawrence Krubner: 08:16 you should not allow external links, but rather, as we do on accumulist, all external links should actually be internal tags that then
Lawrence Krubner: 08:16 redirect externally, that way you'll always have the correct value for your "to:" tags
Lawrence Krubner: 08:17 those are just a few ideas i have, having used the site for 20 minutes
