oreilly.com -- Online Catalog: What Are Syndication Feeds, First Edition

source: O'Reilley
By Shelley Powers
Syndication feeds have become a standard tool on the Web. But when you enter the world of syndicated content, you're often faced with the question of what is the "proper" way to do syndication. This edoc, which covers Atom and the two flavors of RSS--2.0 and 1.0--succinctly explains what a syndication feed is, then gets down to the nitty-gritty of what makes up a feed, how you can find and subscribe to them, and which feed will work best for you.

Notice the price for this 24 page book: $7.95  This is an example of O'Reilley's new publishing on demand. Here is Selley's description of the venture:

In the meantime, O'Reilly has been trying out different publication business models, including a new type of book experience called Rough Cuts and publishing smaller works, online, for less money.

Rough Cuts are pre-production releases of books focused on new, and hot, technology while the book is currently going through final revision and production processing. You pay less money, download PDFs and also, hopefully, provide feedback for the final book. With this, O'Reilly hopes to get books on hot tech into the hands of the readers that much more quickly.

So, can get these technical documents updated easily?

One thing that might need updating in it is the new feeds icon, see Feed Icons and of course my tag room feeds, icons. This is a really important point to get out there in the blogosphere. If we can get more and more blogs to display feeds with this icon, and start calling this stuff that flows in the blogosphere "feeds", rather than the other geeky terms, we will have gone a long way to clarify what is happening for the newbie.

Let's start using this icon, and this means you  !!!!

I think that is the wrong question. Let me see if i can answer the right question. Yes, feeds are still a relevant media for me, they are still getting my focus. Now, as to RSS, that's just some dialect of feeds, is it not? Which dialect the publisher projects is not any of my consearn. The dialect is of concern only to the inner working of the system.

Incidentally, Susan, why don't you start using the new generic orange feed button? Don't you think we should move this media out of the geeky sphere and into the mainstream?

source: Welcome Roger Cadenhead of the RSS Advisory Board.

The RSS Advisory Board should officially support the common feed icon, adopting the symbol on its own site and encouraging its use on web sites, browsers, and syndication software.

Additionally, the board should encourage web publishers to use the icon on any feed, regardless of whether it employs Atom or the two formats that call themselves RSS: RDF Site Summary and Really Simple Syndication.

... let us finally get away from the jumble that we have now:

... let there be just one icon

And finally this !

This may be my final posting here.

Why?

Because we see these icons cropping up all over.  They are too numberous to log.

The tipping point has already happened
