The words news cloud popped into my brain this morning as a way to describe a way I would like to search a database of news information. I ran it through Google and there it was! Too bad this example indexes the Washington Post known to have a liberal bias and not Google News. It does have an interesting interface. Perhaps if it also got some folksonomy it would be even more interesting.
The idea I was searching for as another approach for group UnhackTheBrain was avoiding headlines, which are mostly for trapping eyeballs, and doing a search by area of interest, completeness of information, keywords etc. - maybe even the current "news front".

I like the NewsCloud interface 
. It is not unlike our own left tags navigation in the river. Major differences being (1) we express number of items by a (number in parenthesis) rather than a larger type; (2) we show the entire article and they won't all fit on the same page; and (3) ours is nested ... it keeps narrowing, or not depending on how you click.
But we could come up with pretty much the same interface and put it under a new panel button.

They do have a zoom. The best UI for a cloud is still Visual Thesaurus IMHO. The idea of a news cloud is still flawed in implementation. It can slant the news by the sheer number of articles in Google & those with the noisiest sound bytes. An interface that tried to simulate the weather maps might be interesting indeed!

[google news cloud] has some others like NewZingo with much the same idea but it indexes Google News. NewZingo also has other such clouds for tech etc.

It is hard to search google for the term news front. There is a 1978 Aussie film by that name. I heard the term on talk radio to describe the mainstream media news as a weather phenomena like a weather front. The news crosses the national consciousness much like a weather front crosses the national weather map.
