test page for new item display design

this page is for testing new designs for the item and comments display.

I like to log when i get help from some merciful person on the net.  Here is an example from IRC.

<SethR> Why don't nested div's in FF stay within their box?
<Xsploit> because fire fox sucks
<Xsploit> opera++;
<SethR> well how can they be fixed to stay in the box?
<SethR> my border is controlled by the outer div
<JDigital> ah
<JDigital> put "overflow: auto;" on the outer div
<JDigital> problem solved
<SethR> http://fastblogit.com/newItem.html
<SethR> http://fastblogit.com/newItem.html look at it in FF and then in IE ... IE seems to be correct
<JDigital> SethR: try the overflow: auto; thing
<SethR> JDigital,  Hey thanks man, that was f****** with my mind .. overflow: auto works great !
<JDigital> I know

Thanks, JDigital, whoever you are .

I don't understand you test page with all that duplication, nor the motivation to change the item displays.

Well at this stage its just a place for me to try out different technical problems with the new design i have in mind.   There are several places where our current design hurts:
  • *separation of items from comments
  • places for to show how to comment, and how many comments or none, and hidden comments
  • large pictures or text push screen out of shape
  • there needs to be more predictability between the edit screen and the display screens
  • the way things are factored now in the programming sucks
  • unification of all screen displays ... mostly the only one different now is rich text comment
  • factoring of design variables into the css file so that eventually we can have skins
* I don't necessarily like the way comments and items are differentiated.  I'm not really sure what is wrong with it, but it just doesnt feel right.  I want to muck around with it a bit to see if i can make it feel better.  It feels different than traditional comments in the blogosphere ... part of that is good ... but part of that is bad ....

... if you have any style ideas about how to differentiate comments in a conversation, now would be the time to air them.

While only thinly tethered to new item display design, I would like to be able to print an item with or W/O it's comments without all the rest of the headers & the lefthand colum of taglists etc.

yep, thats a good $wish.

Strangely enough you might be able to do it now by printing the item from your aggregator since the comments are not included yet and that does seem like a feature of an aggregator.  With bloglines you could email it to yourself and then print it out of your email program.

One thing that may or not be of use is a redlight on an item or comment that tells you that someone has recently referenced the item. Also someway to acquire the referencor's attention for a chat.  In other words make it easier to start a chat on a particular item without switching screens. (You already started a bit of that the other day). It needs to be balanced. I don' t think you want to lose the wiki & blog nature to the chat nature.

... perhaps on the right in any room we could show who is there or who recently viewed the page.  I think i would allow it to show only named people, don't want to show pestilance all over the place.  It would be nice to get the feeling that people are stading around looking at the items and when they are available to chat with you.

One thing i did notice is that people are not drawn to the chat who's here window.  But then most of our visits are single page views.

A good example of how large pictures or certain placement of pictures will  push the screen out of whack is 2693.   I do a lot of compensating for the shortcommings of fbi, but someone comming out of the wilds, my son who doesn't care about the intricacies of web design and CSS will produce a undersirable outcome.  Now i have a good example of this and the changes i make should be able to make that item look acceptable along with the others in the river.

Some people just have trouble with the 10 pounds of shit in a 5 pound bag problem !
I would expect as a user that fbi would resize the pictures to whatever fbi wants. Otherwise there will be a user who takes over the screen for his own ego or spam purpose. Flickr seems to manage things ok & has gone beyond that to provide 3 sizes of pictures if you want to explore further. I think the width of the item display has to be constant and the pictures need to shrink if they are too large. (prolly easier said than done)
