Folks,

Effective today, I'm resigning from the RSS advisory board. I was
honored to be invited to the list, and give thanks to Rogers Cadenhead
for asking me to join. I think that given Dave Winer's position on the
state of the board, and at his personal request, that it is best for me
to resign.

Thanks to Dave Sifry at Technorati for helping RSS get out of conflict.
... of cousre that is not the whole of this episode.  You'll need to dig deeper for that.

To be honest, my interest in this is part purient, and part as a unbiased journalist.  I really am not taking sides.  I am just very interested in studying Big Dog's effect on this industry and that effect has been nothing short of amazing.

According to the latest, Technorati, Newsgator are gone.  Apparently Big Dog is going to cross them off one at a time.

But did he miss one?

I was really hoping for good things from the RSS public mailing list, but like every RSS 2.0 mailing list before it, the RDF/Atom people have taken over and there's more links to the Atom wiki of late than anything that could be considered constructive. There does not appear to be a path forward, as nobody has the guts to stand up and tell the Atomites to get lost. As such, I've decided that I'm gonna work independently of that mailing list and create RSS documentation to help RSS users on The RSS Blog. Anything I create will be presented to Dave Winer and the RSS Advisory Board for approval. The first thing I would like to create is an RSS interop document that inherits RSS as-is, does not try to change it, and simply provides guidance to RSS developers when publishing and parsing RSS documents. Please feel free to suggest other things that we can work together on, to make RSS better. Comments of the line "use RDF" or "use Atom" will be deleted. Sorry, but there has to be a forum where people can discuss RSS without getting RDF and Atom jammed down their throat.

Another blog following this ...

Quoting Dave:
?It?s not that I want it to remain ambiguous, it *has* to remain ambiguous, because the roadmap says so.?
...
Killing the RSS Advisory Board (or using a Bully Pulpit) to villify the current leadership is painful to watch. I?d like to see someone in the b?verse get it and call Dave to task for his behaviors? But the most intelligent voices in this space have simply moved on to another format and a different governance body out of frustration with the ?Red Queen of RSS?.

Now, if you want to do something about ambiguity, write up an unofficial "RSS 2.0 best practices document" (based on current consensus, without claiming to rev the version), and gently encourage people to move in that direction. This would help to reduce the number of odd, funky interpretations of RSS 2.0 without further confusing the situation.
yep, that would be my choice.
emphasis mine.

And for the record, this is how i really feel about the substance of this drama:
source:  posted on Dave's Wordpress Blog

As a developer i must admit that it was easier and faster to make a RSS 2.0 feed (which i did for www.speaktomecatalog.com) than it was to make an Atom feed (which i did for fastblogit.com). I am actually thinking of switching fastblogit default to RSS 2.0. Now, to be honest, my problems might have been that i was trying to tune in to the most ?modern? feed (Atom 1.0) but then discovered that mostly i couldnt get it to work with the aggregators that i was using; and then had to switch back to Atom .3 and change all of the revised element names ? hmm, now why did they do that? I think Dave has a good point, RSS 2.0 is not a moving target, and other formats still are.

As a developer, what i really need is a ?official? Best Practices document. I don?t want no stinking new version. As a consumer, i don?t even want to know the version.

You don't need to legislate and specify to help developers.  You just need to show them how to do things in their best interest.  The dictionary does not freeze the meaning of a word, but it does tell you how to use it so that most people will understand you.
