the Web 2.0 craze produces a huge amount of crap metadata, and someone
will have to clean up the mess in the resulting RDF models even if GRDDL
is ever deployed widely enough to generate models worth the effort. And
let's not even start on the inevitable meltdown of "folksonomies" (I
predict formation of a black hole of fundamental crapitational force)
... & the linguist that he is managed to get the word cluster-fuck in there too!
The real challenge is that understanding human language has still a way to go (for humans & computers). Once that is mastered then you can throw all your metadata, RDF & semantic crap away (IMHO).

What is interesting is that our brains working with our culture do this naturally. This being making sense of the hair ball. The hard part ... ,the part that we can't yet do, ... is to create a mechinism that does this without using our brains.
The "inevitable meltdown of folksonomies" won't happen because using folksonomies is using our brains rather than relying on artifical mechinisms. Of course even those things we do with our brains can be melted down ... people are always trying to melt them down ... people abuse things that works for some transitory advantage ... like spammers ... spammers can melt down folksonomies, by abusing them. The solution is comes back to the group, the community... spammers are excluded from the community ... those who abuse folksonomies are excluded from using them in your community.

... of course if you don't have a community ... err well, then your shit out of luck. You will need to rely upon google and whatever else happens in the chaos of the internet.

Nah! get rid of communicating & coming together & you get rid of community. PC is an attempt by some people to take control of the conversational behavior of a group of people. FUCK PC!
community
1375, from O.Fr. communit?, from L. communitatem (nom. communitas) "community, fellowship," from communis "common, public, general, shared by all or many," (see common). L. communitatem "was merely a noun of quality ... meaning 'fellowship, community of relations or feelings,' but in med.L. it was, like universitas, used concretely in the sense of 'a body of fellows or fellow-townsmen' " [OED]. An O.E. word for "community" was gem?nscipe "community, fellowship, union, common ownership," probably composed from the same PIE roots as communis.

We all seem to have the "pc community" - ready & willing to
censure. Of course the internet seems to "fuck them in the ass" pretty
well with their anything goes party...party..

Seth says
Well if you don't have censure, you dont have community. If there is no boundary between inside and outside a group, then there is no group. Reminds me of the project 2 experience ... that community only allowed people in with whom a consensus could be formed... that was what created the community. "Anything goes" defines the street ... only community there hangs on much larger (and hense less useful) groups ... nation, humanity. Being pc (politically correct) is relative to your community. Get rid of pc and you get rid of the community.

Would you stay in a house where people were shitting all over the place ? No, i don't think so, not in the real world. Shitting all over the place is not PC. So which comes first .... pepole staying in the house ..."communicating & coming together" there , or people not shitting all over the place? We don't allow spammers here because they would rapidly force everyting of value out. Spamming here is not PC. We define PC for our group. We don't depend on a Martha Stuart or a Dave Winer to do it for us. Of course then we are not in the same community as a Martha Stuart or a Dave Winer, are we ?

... that's a radical leap into the toilet

Spamming is a crime for email & someday may be extended. Defacing our website is something we do not allow - it's not about PC. It's the rules of use. Someday when we get an ID system more sophisticated I presume we might require an agreement on the rules of use of FastBlogIt.
PC really is a different animal.

BTW, re your folksonomy, it took a long time to find a picture of a pig on flickr that was suitable for 2929. People put up all kinds of pictures of their friends under the tag pig. Hog didn't work either for the same reason. Finally I went to Webshots and had mostly the same problem except that I finally put in the tag "pink pig" and found the one I used. I wonder what the Darwinian evolution of tagging is going to affect that "black hole of fundamental crapitational force".
