The real challenge is that understanding human language has still a way to go (for humans & computers). Once that is mastered then you can throw all your metadata, RDF & semantic crap away (IMHO).

The "inevitable meltdown of folksonomies" won't happen because using folksonomies is using our brains rather than relying on artifical mechinisms. Of course even those things we do with our brains can be melted down ... people are always trying to melt them down ... people abuse things that works for some transitory advantage ... like spammers ... spammers can melt down folksonomies, by abusing them. The solution is comes back to the group, the community... spammers are excluded from the community ... those who abuse folksonomies are excluded from using them in your community.

Well if you don't have censure, you dont have community. If there is no boundary between inside and outside a group, then there is no group. Reminds me of the project 2 experience ... that community only allowed people in with whom a consensus could be formed... that was what created the community. "Anything goes" defines the street ... only community there hangs on much larger (and hense less useful) groups ... nation, humanity. Being pc (politically correct) is relative to your community. Get rid of pc and you get rid of the community.

We don't depend on a Martha Stuart or a Dave Winer to do it for us. Of course then we are not in the same community as a Martha Stuart or a Dave Winer, are we ?

Spamming is a crime for email & someday may be extended. Defacing our website is something we do not allow - it's not about PC. It's the rules of use. Someday when we get an ID system more sophisticated I presume we might require an agreement on the rules of use of FastBlogIt.
PC really is a different animal.

BTW, re your folksonomy, it took a long time to find a picture of a pig on flickr that was suitable for 2929. People put up all kinds of pictures of their friends under the tag pig. Hog didn't work either for the same reason. Finally I went to Webshots and had mostly the same problem except that I finally put in the tag "pink pig" and found the one I used. I wonder what the Darwinian evolution of tagging is going to affect that "black hole of fundamental crapitational force".
