About: american idol
This is the first time I have see such blatant and distracting mixing of ads with content. Apparently it's not enough that they put bizzar coca cola cups on the judges tables, now they have their stuff in your face during Secrest's interviews. I don't object to tasteful product placement. I do object to in-your-face distractions. These are an insult to the audience and an assault on your attention.
Did anyone else find these objectionable?

I won't hold my breath - this one is ramping up nicely. We are already used to the network logos on the bottom right & the crawling weather warnings along with the network news crawlers on Fox News & CNN. They will go about the time that evil becomes passe - oops! I thought Google had already done that "do no evil"

I mostly watch the rejection phases. Coke was obvious from the beginning. More insidious is this stuff creeping into the movies where they are not so obvious to someone not suspecting an advertizement. With TV you are usually aware of ads. TV is a whore to advertizement. Higher ratings - more advertizements. I think there is a threshhold of ads that a person watching will tolerate in terms of program interruption. So now they have to cram them in during the program itself. With football they have a digital system where they can put the ads in the background of the stadium below the bleachers the same way they put the yellow 1st down lines on the field. Can be done with regular programs as well.
Yes, product placement is nothing new. But this was the first time i saw it pushing the envelope which is why i tagged it into firsts. This is a kind of attention spam, a kind of attention graffiti, that tends to make our "American" culture ugly. I suppose there is no legislative or technological solution to it just as there is no legislative or technological solution to spam on the net. But i hope that in the distant future there will be a solocialogical and behavioral change in consciousness which will make attention spam as archaic as burning witches at the stake.
