Do we need threaded comments ?

About: Ability to see the items commented on by a person in the order of their comments, with most recent first

It has been suggested that comments be threaded with multiple levels of trust like slashdot. But i suggest that it would be better to encourage the threading by virtue of making new items that are linked via the permalink-About .

This item is a example of a topic divulging ... if you start talking about something different than the titel of the item ... well ...errr ... then ... just make a new item ... and preserver the backward link to where that discussion started in the About of the new item.

one thing is that here we have groups and it is withing a group that you get "trust". I really dont know hwo slashdot works.

i think /. tried to bridge the gap between newsgroup, chat line & geek news website - it's good for what it does on the other hand i dislike the threading

The problem they faced was too much comment on popular items - thus they had to hide the content on deep threads. I think if you AVOID threading then you will force people to use the simple way of doing things as you suggest and expose the value of the schema design.

yes iv always found /. 's threading too tedious to bother with ... yet i like threading on usenet ... in a way this is going for the same niche ... cross between blogs, usenet, chat, web forum. It was strange first time Jason saw it he said, "Oh your making a forum".

if you want to preserve permalinks in the comment lines to model a thread then the [] syntax should be considered for the initial release.

thing is that a comment does not have a permalink and to see a comment aparty from the dialogue under an item is somewhat undefined.

of course we could give a comment a permalink /GROUP/item/ITEMNUMBER/comment/COMMENTnuber then the room showing that item could highlight the comment ... actually that is not a bad idea

But now your request not only requires the comment to be linked to it's item, but alow linked within a chain of comments. Hmmm .... still got to think about the utility of that one.
