Dayn WAW

About: Waw's Dictionary - page 0

I have discovered an I think unpublished dictionary of the poetical slang that Our Friend used in his autobiography called Znuz is Znees. The about page shows page 0.  There are a couple of poems as yet unpublished and approximately 73 typed pages in the manuscript. This is a place warmer for perhaps another dictionary like the ming dictionary that could be put online. (Or maybe published separately). The manuscript is dated 26 August 1954 19:44

According to this, in 1954 , AJAX meant (see next item) ...

yeah i though about that ... so what does "ajax" have to do with backgammon?

Seth says
wizzard this is quite a find.

Mark de LA says
Thanks, this is really terrific. I've often wondered about the slang he uses. I assume "znuz" and "znees" are part of the last entries in that dictionary.

If no one else wants to, I will volunteer to type this up into another excel spreadsheet for the project.

might be better to make a web interface ... save all the time to convert xcel to the db on the web.

So far you are the only volunteer - I think I have more than one copy - I will have to look again since this one is a carbon copy with some original handwritten corrections. In a few days I will sort it out.

No rush, that's good for another upcoming for me. Am still scanning the Zen poetry and Tai Shu paintings as I find time.  Will be glad to do the spreadsheet input when you're ready.

Actually a scan of the characters in the ming dictionary in BC2 would more useful sooner. This is because once we have a table of the ming-wen and it's name we can easily add a column for the number of wam in the ming wen & thereby create an enlarged Silver Cradle to find the ming wen which we do not know the name of.

Sure, question: what would be the best naming convention to tie of the characters with a look-up for the ming dictionary?  Ming name, or perhaps by radical#?

Seth mentioned that a table of the characters & the ming name would be enough to merge them together. I am suggesting that later after that is done I can go back thru the 1014 characters and count the strokes and add that column to the table.

Okay, I see where you're going. The scanning sounds like something I can lend a hand with soon. Will scan all the ming characters from BC2, then break them up into separate individual images w/ the ming as their file names.  Then you guys can take it from there.  Cheers!

So far I have uncovered copies 2, 3 & 4 of Dayn Waw - each with it's own extras. Some have more of CFR's hand drawn pictures. Some have more poetry. Some have hand written insertions. One has the Morongo family vacation set of letters (also having poetry of this style in it. Below is a sample with a drawing in it.

Was just thinking that this language sounds a whole lot like RAP !

IMHO this 73 + page book is publishable, but would take a lot to integrate all 4 versions and format in a way that the public might enjoy - as an illustrated slang poetry book.

Go for it

If i remember right, some of the Morongo letters were quite jucy ...

Mark de LA says
This one caught my eye in perusing the Morongo Letters.  It had been rejected by the Saturday Evening Post so to get even I publish it here . Strangely enough not all the words are in Dayn Waw.  I like the turn of the phrase in the title.

Mark de LA says
As a clue, also these dictionaries help with the words in BC2 intro to auto & their tzu to the ming version of same.
