Ming Translator - Old Version

About: ming translator

I have put up the old version of the Ming Translator (without the ming characters) just in case . Personally when I am translating the small book contents I find it more useful. I don't need the characters for that & it takes a second or so to paint them on the screen. I don't yet like the format of the one with characters. Perhaps a vertical array on the right side (or the left) would be better. I would also like them with their ming names as well below each character. Changing it is another one of those s . A more comprehensive English-Ming dictionary would be useful if one can grok all the synonyms the ming words have. Also, a complete Silver Cradle database with the proper count of the ming wam can be done.  In any ming vai the scan of the ming chee is useful, helpful & much appreciated. ming chay chun ko bay .

This book published December 21, 1954 by CFR organizes the ming characters by the count of the "official" strokes to make the characters in the prescribed way. For example normally a simple square box would be thought of as 4 strokes, but it can be made in two strokes with the fundamental characters OK and JOT . See the book for more of the rules.

I think having the ming name below the characters is an appropriate suggestion. Since you bring it up this early in the scanning process, am already going back thru the existing scans and adding the names below. Will send those soon for re-upload.

Thanks again & Happy Easter to all!

Woh ... the name does not need to be in the scan, that can be easily made to appear under the picture programatically.

Yep, I agree - no need for rescans.

The point was I don't like my layout yet.

On the other hand, burning the name into the scan would solve the problem of characters that are pronounced the same but written differently ...like bartbart1 ... not to mention that it would make the html a whole lot simpler.  So you guys decide ...

Don't fortet that you don't need to display the characters full size ... see this example. That might also inform your decision about the need (or lack thereof) of the phonem to be written below the character ... because if the characters are sized small, the subtext under the character will probably be unreadable.

No sweat, I'm not rescanning, but actually typing the name in a readable type in a white space beneath the character.  It's not that much extra work and can be done while I'm breaking the individual images up.
Plus, the name approximates the original in BC2. If you don't think it is worth the extra effort, that's okay by me too.winking

This question of duplicates came up earlier and I tend to agree with your take. Adding the names to the scans was sort of my intention for doing so.  It's a little extra effort, but I'd rather make characters identifiable for folks who aren't familiar with Ming too.

I like that layout, especially the vertical. The smaller size doesn't bother me either.  I wouldn't go any smaller though.

I really like your examples. I think most Chinese read characters that small through familiarity. We who read ming may need it a little larger. Making the translator nice & so forth is something I will focus on a little later. I will post a second directory of your ming with the phonetics just for comparison maybe later today. My focus now is the translation of the contents of the ming shoon szu shoon series (projective geometry). I am half done !

Here is a sample of what the translator might look like with the ming wen below the ming chee .
I think it evens up the vertical sloap a bit.  Without the ming wen I noticed that the ming chee line always seemed to slope a bit. Comments welcome!

It's the nature of the hand-made wam, I think, and their relation to each other that gives it that slight angular quality.  I don't notice it as much in the vertical stack-up.
Any opinons on the pros/cons of the phonemes beneath the characters?  Thanks, M, for uploading the examples.

Mark de LA says
It may be an optical allusion. Ming chee don not have a natural horizontal alignment like english words do. Putting them in a box as your examples removes what I detected.  I would have to switch back to the other directory to prove my point, if any.
