How many believe that the media should publish to the World (& all terrorists that can read) how the USA gathers our intelligence (sic?) ? How many of you think that it is more important to keep your phone conversations private & secret even if it means that "right" & privilege is also extended to terrorists ? How many of you (who were not at ground zero for the 9-11 attacks) think this is a game for lawyers & politicians to play with where your lives & tax dollars are at stake ? [ you are safe at first base if a lawyer can argue that you were just innocently sketching the design of a nuclear bomb on a piece of paper for art's sake !
] etc., -OR- the US Constitution says that privacy is the most important "right" there is even when it appears to some that to take it that way would make it is a suicide pact!

Is it just me, or is anyone else getting sick of our freedoms being eroded by our government under the banner of "fear of terrorists" ?

When you tell everyone you got a secret you lose secrecy. Some mission's level of classification can be considered classified. This was in force when I was in the military long before the Bush family was in office. Sorry folks, you just don't get to know everything you may think you want to know or leverage for your own political purposes
. The military system distributes information on a "need to know" basis thus limiting exposure to risk. The military's system of classification is based upon what harm it would do to the country as a whole if the enemy knew our plans. It is based upon the damage an enemy could do to us if they knew some particular information about us such as what our counter-terrorism plans are or our weapons capabilities are. Unfortunately, the media thinks that if they find out something their first liegance is to publish it regardless of the harm it can do.
********
Case in point (not classified information) - yesterday it was published that someone stole a DVD with 25 million ss#s and the names of veterans. The media speculated how the person who did it probably didn't know what he had or how valuble it might be on the black market. Unless he doesn't watch TV, he now knows for sure!

I do have serious troubles that the government being able to suppress legitimate investigation of it's activities just by claiming that secrets may be disclosed. Certainly the judge can examine the materials and make a unbiased assessment. Like i said above, there must be checks ... sans any scrutany by the courts our government will erode our rights. Living in America will no longer be what it used to be.

Well, this is where we differ. I trust most of the people who are authorized to classify information to handle the information correctly. I DON'T trust lawyers, prosecutors & judges to do the same. Most lawyers don't have the particular training needed to judge classified information. Case in point, where do all the leaks about Grand Jury information come from - even though the law requires it to be secret? If judges can't police their own branch of government what makes you think they are qualified to police a different one? Judges are appointed or , if elected, run unapposed. Regardless of your political persuasion, the government of the United States is one of the most transparent governments on the face of the Earth.

Lets see if the model also works for Ebola.
* it is evil & creeps in unsuspecting
* no apparent cure
* anyone we see could have it
* government has no strategy except isolation
* we look to government to take charge & fix the problem
* political correctness prevents efficiency
(can't prevent migration from african countries where it is rampant)
* I'm safe it is not happening in my neighborhood.
* spreads by personal contact
* some say it is mutating
* is dos ostrichs not the solution?

well just as in the case with terrorism, if someone is charged with preventing an outbreak then obviously they must be vigilant ... and where danger lurks we all must take appropriate precautions. on the other hand if none of that applies, whipping up worry on an if-come is just wasted energy and can even be harmful when it starts to turn into a crazed mob.
Yep trust the government ..... PML Maybe the governments should shut down the Internet until all our problems disappear, lll ditto twitter, facebook & the first amendment.

If you can't be trusted & I can't be trusted then who is there to trust.
