Harper's Weekly. A Journal of Civilization, May 22, 1875

I am the proud owner of this publication, 22 pages from history shortly after the Civil War .  I found a source of these on  Antique row in Snomish WA.

The cartoon on the front is by CS Reinhart.  The article, "The Papacy and Universal War" is by Eugene Lawrence and is very anti-Catholic, it mentions how the Church was against public schools and was fomenting war in Europe.

More later ... especially if anyone is interested in this period of American History.

Yep, there were some pretty awful popes: http://www.somethingawful.com/d/most-awful/popes-cadaver-synod.php  . There are some pretty awful Protestants (think about the Catholics & Protestants in Ireland).  There are some pretty awful Mormons (some who were polygamists & Muslims (we have the whole 9/11 thingy).  What's the point?

No point here.  This item merely represents the Harper's Weekly illustration of Marcus Antonius's line "let slip the dogs of war" in Julius Cesar.  The etching was used to illustrate a political article about the political situation with the Vatican in 1875.  I put my point on the Facebook item.
