THERE IS NO CONCENSUS on Global Warming!

About: opinionjournal - featured article

This from one of the 11 scientists who prepared the NAS report, a meterology professor at MIT:
source: ... RICHARD S. LINDZEN

Our primary conclusion was that despite some knowledge and agreement, the science is by no means settled. We are quite confident (1) that global mean temperature is about 0.5 degrees Celsius higher than it was a century ago; (2) that atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide have risen over the past two centuries; and (3) that carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas whose increase is likely to warm the earth (one of many, the most important being water vapor and clouds).

guess if one of the contributers to the NAS study, who is an actual meterologist from MIT no less,  is not going to convince you that this is political & not worth a panic, nothing will! You have been AlGored! Enjoy  that loving feeling

Notice your leftie talking points are showing. It shows up in the smear of the "oil company paid him ...." without proof (besides probably more talking points smears).

One might wonder why you want to believe this global warming panic, Seth. What do you get out of the belief that humans are destroying the Earth when there is doubt about it. What are you personally doing to stop it yourself? Writing blogs - that's using up more energy. Do you ride a bicycle instead of driving ? Do you not eat meat which requires resources which pollute the air to produce? What do you sacrifice to cool things off ? How has it altered your behavior?

Your uppercase spin on "There is no consensus on Global Warming" contradicts the passage you quoted where Lindzen's committee agrees with the three major propositions.  You may also want to study how Coby Beck refutes the proposition in your title here and regarding your red emphasis, you might want to read this .

I think where Lindzen says "For example, the full text noted that 20 years was too short a period for estimating long-term trends, but the summary forgot to mention this" the "20" must be a typo, because the graphs all show a trend since 1900.  But in any case that 100 years may be insufficient is dealt with here.

This old dissent has been kicked around for about 5 years now, and has been updated by the recent National Academy of Sciences report, see 3775 .  It is nothing new nor particularly informative.  My spin (reading) of this running battle is that the oil industry paid this guy to pick out some minor objections to the way the political summary documents of the IPCC were written and to empathize that we can always doubt.  Sorry your item does nothing to lessen my concerns.

Yep that needs to be verified or retracted.

Actually your surfacy comment here is based on a false assumption.  I do not want to believe in global warming.  That is not the first time i have said this here.  How many times do i need to say it before you accept it, M ?   Pointing a guilty finger at individual people's behavior is also not productive.  We are all caught up in a giant mechanism which dominates our actions ... the assumption that your can just wave a meme at the people and they will just change their individual behaviors which are being enforced by everything that they come in contact with ... is and absurb proposition.  No, the avenue forward is to change the system such that it enforces healthy behaviors.  But yes, were i totaly convinced of the globla warming process, it would be reflected more in my individual decisions.

To blame things on society instead of taking personal responsibility is what I see in the quote:

... notice I didn't actually call you paranoid
maybe this is what your looking for with your fish thingy:

Acknowledging the dominant factor in human behavior does not imply a lack of taking personal responsibility.  If you would practice not thinking so much in leftrightism with binary logic you would get that.

Look, groking that culture is a dominant determiner of human behavior is just to grok how habits work ... habit is a good news bad news thing ... that degree to which we individually break out of the bad habits we get from our culture ... the dregree to which we plasticize our habits ... to that degree our actions are self determined.  Very fue of us get very far in that direction.  Keith was dealing with some of that in his podcast Thelma Coast To Coast.  To be a student of History, Politics, and Economics and to ignore that fact is just stupid and idiotic.

...I disagree - if society & environment is the dominant factor in taking action then you have very little personal responsibility - nothing to do with liberal -vs- conservative. It may influence, but the dominant factor - bullshit!

The Right manufactures the debate about global warming

"There is a debate over whether [climate change is] manmade or naturally caused," Bush said yesterday. Yet among scientists, the debate has long been over. Rather than argue the science, the right has resorted to manufacturing scientific doubt where there is none. Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal ran a column from a prominent climate skeptic that argued, "There Is No 'Consensus' On Global Warming."

Commentators on CNBC picked up on the theme later in the day, saying, "There is not scientific consensus." (One network anchor said there is no way "puny, gnawing little humans" could change the climate in "70 years.") The right wants the public to ignore scientific research that find "human activities are responsible for much of the recent warming," and instead believe that we should wait for more research before we take action.

One wonders if we can find the smoking gun ... find where someone high up and respected in the right-wing movement has written a memo or has verifiably instructed think tanks or media channels to skew the facts of this debate.  This really does smack of Hari Seldon's psychohistory in  the foundation series.  And what Seldon correctly anticipated, however, is that when these initivities are uncovered they beget their nemisis ... hense the necessity to keep the foundation secret, so uncovering the smoking gun will be quite a coo.

Someday, just for grins , you should read the entire NAS Study.  I was impressed in the first 27 pages (the summary area) how the caveats popped up all over the place before I nodded off
