About: Using MapCruncher


The Digital Historical Zoom project attempts to find matching points between our modern navagatable maps like Virtual Earth or Google Earth and ancient maps.  The idea being that we should be able to zoom into the mind set of ancient people from our current locations by zooming into their maps.  In 3740 i linked up two points between Google Earth and a map dating back to 1650 when old world explorers thought California was an island.  In this item i have linked three points on that same map to Virtual Earth by using MapCruncher, thanks to a tip from Joshua Allen. 

MapCruncher has a very intuitive and straightforward way to link points to any map.   However when the maps are not drawn in the same perspective, MapCruncher will distort the view of your map and show the Virtual Earth map in it's correct perspective.  It would be helpful if there were a option to switch back and forth, now having your map shown as-is, now having the VE map shown as-is.   For some unknown reason MapCruncher rotated my map around some vertical axis and i don't know how to rotate it back.  Another problem is that you cannot rotate or change elevation angel of either map ... or at least i couldnt figure out how.  In that regard Google Earth is Superior.  However if the maps are more closely aligned,  and many points need to be identified, MapCruncher, imho, would be the tool of choice.
