In view of [item 3796] and [item 1722] we have a dichotomy of impossibility.  I propose a negotiated approach. I will give up the perceived ad hominem nuances if you will do the same.  Biblical references: Matt 7:3 & Luke 6:41 may inform.

Well i don't grok your dichotomy of impossiblities and would be glad to discuss it ... even prhaps in [tag proposition node] according to the rules and norms setup there to prevent  ad hominem etc.  But please on another node .. this one is about Jimbo's Wiki.

The fact that you want to argue about it probably shows the dichotomy itself.  The golden rule & it's derivatives such as 3796 require that one front good will ahead of time - such was what the references of Matt 7:3 etc were about. On the other hand (dichotomy) 1722 really says that the right-wrong game is pre-programmed behavior & is always to be expected; there being only rare occurrences when one is allowed out by the program. Therefore it would seem to be impossible to get outside the ad hominem attacks without a negotiated settlement.

I've had to deal with a share of online ad hominems before. It seems to me sometimes that it would be more advantageous for both individuals to do what could be called thinking with before thinking against the other's proposition. I dunno how else to say it at the moment.

Yes, Breck. We tried in 3828 but it fell by the wayside.  When I write something I have to be behind it. I don't want to write incongruently. It is sometimes easier than at other times. Politics is the hardest. Just this morning I seem to agree more with the Libertarians than the Conservatives - there is a difference.

Well said .  I think to respond to something usefully, one needs first to understand it from the point of view or the original author.  Without that original understanding your response can not be much better than static from the point of view of a convergance of opinion.

When you think you are right, everything else appears as static - see 1722 again!  It's hard wiring - some would say it's the Ahrimanic double. It will eventually disappear in evolution or with sufficient devotion to the Great Work.

Well it is certainly true that strong beliefs tend to get in the way of recognizing reality.  But there is no such hard wiring to which you refer.  I've seen many times where humans have not contorted their verbal behavior such that they always come out sounding right in their own ears.  Doing that is just a bad habit and reifying it with Ahrimanic demons is not going to help us unlearn it.
