Mark, the process of hyping and villianizing the enemy is part of the process of war. It is necessary to dehumanize the enemy. It is necessary to make you terrified of the enemy. Not only does it get people juiced up to the point of going to war, but it also sells books, films, and proda. Apparently these guys have done a good job on you. The reality of the so called enemy, just like the reality of global warming, is quite different than this imagery portrays. It is strange that you buy into this fear mongering on the terrorism but bush aside the fear mongering on global warming. Then too the other side is doing the same thing against you. It is a spiral. The solution is to get out of the loop. Throw water on all of the hype. Recognize when politicians are revving up for a war. Notice how the media chirps in to promote it. That is the time to start anti-war activities ... see my fatwa (btw, thanks for the fyi on Wahhabi fatwa). The rhetoric right now twards Iran is almost identical to the rhetoric that lead up the the invasion of Iraq. What scares the shit out of me is that there are so many Americans that are being duped into buying this. If you want to practice flower power and positive thinking and actions, there is no better goal than to throw water on the causes of that initiative. Do not get obsessed with it. It will scare the shit out of you and then you will go and vote for the factions in this country who are creating that conflagration.

source: ... I agree with you in principle & I am against war as well. Where we differ is what to do about it. What is a good war? Are you against all wars - even to protect (say) Washington State? Do you have a principle that says wait for the terrorists to act [& maybe wipe out an American city] before waging a war to protect the US ? Do you just hate Bush & are thus against anything he does at all?

Terrorism is a new kind of war - it's hard to distinguish the terrorists from the innocents. How would you fight it given that America's enemies are already armed & ready? Call a cease-fire? Will terrorists observe a cease fire without America's or Israel's [complete] capitulation ? It is a bit too late to remove war's cause in poverty isn't it? What would you do about the Islamic madrases preaching hate of America? [some while in America]

Actually you didn't have to mention 1722.

I will need some time to address the questions you pose in 3983. Thos questions need more like a complete essay rather than a quick shoot from the hip response. To understand my response you will need to open your mind and challenge some of your assumptions. Also bear in mind that the path to peace is not a simple one ... and i certainly do not have all the answers ... in fact i probably do not have any of the answers ... but what i think i can see is the US going head long into a wider war. That is what distrubs me. Who knows, perhaps if enough voices are raised dousing this fire in its infancy, we can put it out. So stay tuned.

I think that Bush is aiming at something else. I suspect that if the UN security council can speak with one voice & counter the Syrians & especially Iran's desire for the mother of all wars with isolation - then there is a chance.

Or maybe you should exameine in more detail exactly what you consider the "right-wrong" game .... which comments that you make would you label tansactions in the right-wrong game ... which comments that i make would you label such a transaction ... be extensional about it. Do you consider this comment a right-worng comment? Was your's to which i respoded? etc.

I am not immune from the right-wrong game. Very few people are that have human programming in their genes. Then, again, I am not nor do I pretend to be a pacifist. Clarity on what the right-wrong game is can be had by noticing the automaticity of the need to respond to a comment with one which counters the argument of someone else. In a sense the context of an argument itself is the distinction.
