Blink

About: blink (washingtonpost.com)

I got the book Blink thinking it might be related to silent-thought . It turns out that the first use may be in the flushgov.net arena.  Under the theory of thin slices apparently a careful observing, recording & analysis of a couple having a conversation can tell whether the couple will remain married or get a divorce.  I would like to extend this to politicians (not the divorce part ) but to how they relate to their constituents.  At first it might have to be covert gathered from news briefings & public appearances. Later it may come from debates & campaign appearances. Someday it would be interesting to have it become routine & become part of the politician's public profile.

What is going on inside a person's mind is not so secret any more. Techniques such as SPAFF (an acronym for the words specific affect) & the field of NLP can make more public than people would like to believe.

Since this stuff is psychology & derived from family counseling it may take some time to translate it into the political arena. Here is another more detailed  PDF on the subject. google spaff code will get a lot more.  I would also like to compare the method with what can be derived from NLP.

In another 4123 I gave a hint about what we need at the highest level as a politician:

BTW, what gets a person out of the loop is consciousness & consciousness of the loop. On the backend of the will to get out of the loop is the desire to experience a higher state of being & the inspiration to do so for some personal or cosmic benefit.  This experience doesn't have the juice that righteous incitement & being incited to hatred have, but others have paved the way such as Mahatma Ghandi & Martin Luther King, Jr. .  What the world needs NOW is someone who can speak with the authority & power of these men to this modern world of trouble.  I don't know of anyone at this time who can do it.
... NOW I think I am closing in on a test. The process is yet to be invented in how to get there.

Two questions:
  1. Can a specific SPAFF result be faked?
  2. Will this be used by campaign operatives & coaches?

so are you proposing honest brokers who analize a politicians speaches and other public behaviors and provide a narrative of what they are actually thinking ?

Me thinks the answers to those questions are, yes and yes.

Well, I would suspect number 2 would be yes. Number 1 is like faking a lie-detector test.

Not honest brokers, but trained psychologists.  The part about SPAFF coding that is fascinating is that someone has been able to take the data & code all the emotions going through the participants in the study.  The participants were wired up like a lie detector.  I would be surprised if a politician would ever willingly go for that! This is an area of research how to do the analysis from a distance without the wiring up.
Furthermore NLP says that the eye movements, changes in skin coloration, posture & other things are clues to what's going on. You may not be able to tell what the content is, but how the person reacts to the content - i.e. what emotions are going on about the content.

Under the heading of stuff going in the right direction: see this article.
The part where YouTube is hosting videos of what some of the candidates are saying.

A quick diversion here to the thought of emoteys.  I find that the emoteys here are an interesting property to give to communications - an indicator, context or something - i'm not sure yet exactly what it is probably similar to the coding of the SPAFF experiment.  I would like someday to study an expansion of the emoteys such that they are useful to a larger study of SPAFF kind.  Basically, I am self-coding a communication for emotions.  Some times I find I have an emotion that is not expressed in the current set. I suppose I could record the lack of the appropriate emotey & tag the item (too bad don't have tags on comments).

Here is something else that feeds into the mix. See Brain Scans May Unlock Candidates' Appeal - here. Some people might balk at being pigeon-holed as to their political beliefs.  The challenge here is that nobody runs anymore on their beliefs.  It's mostly RWG + stump speeches tuned to give the demographic audience what they want in the way of buzzwords & taxpayer $$.

More from the author of blink (his blog) & comments on dog behaviorist Cesar Millan (the dog whisperer) 's methodology: this & this .  Since I think Cesar is onto something good with his training of problem dogs these articles & his blog are fascinating.
