Hamas to allow peace talks as its militants kill Israeli soldier

Is it just me or does anyone else see a tilt between these paragraphs ...
source: 2nd paragraph
But the apparent softening of Hamas's stance was undermined by the killing of an Israeli soldier by the group's armed wing during an ambush in the Gaza Strip.
  ... and then ...
source: in the 3rd paragraph
He was the first Israeli soldier to die in Gaza in nearly three months of raids against Palestinian militants since the kidnapping of an Israeli tank soldier on June 21. More than 200 Palestinians have been killed in the fighting.
... i mean, what was the analysist, Stephen Farrell, thinking when he composed that?  Sorry, i don't get it ... could sombody splain it to me?

Note different coverage herehere, and here, and many more under here. A most detailed description of the incident and it's background can be found here.  These other reports that i checked made no linkage between the soldier's shooting and the "underminding" of hope; even though many of them reported both in the same story.  The only linkage between those situations is in Farrell's mind, and unfortunately in the mislead mind of his readers.

Me thinks that those who are not looking for peace are just a mite too enthusiastic in their attempt not to see its possibility.

If instead of polarizing body counts you were to read the entire story you would realize what the headline is all about!
I did read it carefully a couple of times and also read other related stories as well.  There is no linkage between the situations except in Farrell's mind.  What sounded so strange to me is how he concatinates the disparate body count, yet sill reports the linkage.

You can find a more detailed report of the shooting here.

Well, I don't consider Aljazeera an unbiased source. But, from the original article you quoted there is this quote:
source: Earlier, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, and another group, the Popular Resistance Committees, claimed to have shot an Israeli officer after their fighters were ambushed 500m from the Israeli border.
...sounds like Israel might be protecting it's border - given the history of Hamas & the Hezbos sneaking across the border to kidnap & kill soldiers.
The headline is probably aimed at people who have a vested interest in restarting the Israel-Palestinian peace talks.  I suspect that it is saying that in spite of the events described that things will go on.  That's not difficult to understand, Seth. But it must be a slow news day so I invite you to laugh and grok 4396. Good Luck!

Then try thinking from another center other than your instinctual partisan view of the situation.  I got it on the first full read! Good Luck!
Actually i have though of it from different points of view.  First question is on which side are hopes for talks dimming because of the shooting ... Hammas or Israel?  I doubt it would be Israel because they ambushed the militants and took a hit, they can hardly blame Hammas.  If it is on the Hammas side, then he should have stressed the ambush not the shooting.  No, this is just sloppy writing ... prolly unintentional.  If you really do get it, then pelease do explain it.

Yep that would be the implication, i'm glad you said it and not me.  Unfortunately that implication is logically flawed.  On which side was the talks underminded?  Certainly not the Isralie side, because it was their incursion.  Nobody is going to think like "I went into their territory and one of my men got shot, therefore i will not talk peace with them".  Now how about the Palestenian side ... are they to think "The came in my territory and i shot one of them, therefore i'm not going to talk peace with them" ... afterall it is well known that these Isralie incursions are frequent and on-going.  Those are, infact,  the incusrsions that the Palestenians are hoping will be prevented by peace talks.  You put you finger on what Farrell seemingly wanted to imply ... now could you explain to me the logic of that implication?

Look let me spin a senario which, if it had happened that way, Farrells implication would have been logically justified.  There have been no recently reported incidents of violence instigated by Palestenians against Israel.  If Hammas had ambushed an Isralie soldier and killed him, then that would represent a new incident of continuing hostilities.  Israel would be justified in thinking like "See, Palestineans are continuing to harass us, so why should we talk peace with them".   But that senario is not consistent with the facts on the ground.

Here is another article on the talks, "Israelis unmoved by unity platform".  This one should be read with the other above. Between the two, you might get a picture of what is happening.  Please note the kind of dynamics which are actually informing the dialogue.

Here is an informative article about the actual status of the talks ... pro's and con's on both sides.  Here is the best detailed descritipon of the incident.

If I see some gang of thugs outside my house getting ready to charge my house & do a home invasion do I wait for them to come in and kill my wife & family or do I arm my family & go after them? (Notice, Seth, that this is a parable)!
... yep a parable that does not apply.  The Isralies went looking for trouble and they found it.

Actually, what I like most about this headline (remember way back at the top) is that "Hamas says that it will allow ...." ... like it is in charge of it all
Actually his headline reads: "Hamas to allow peace talks as its militants kill Israeli soldier" which expessess neither analysis nor factual reporting, but rather Farrell's bias.  Apprently that is what you like.

seth 2006-09-12 10:54:32 4395 ---snip..snip (mostly shit)
As long as Seth continues to spin (& think) that Israel is the bad guy he will never understand this article.
Conversly Mark will never understand Palestine until he gives up the assumption that Israel is always the good guy.

And btw, this item is not about which side of the conflict you are on ... this item is about which side of the pease you are on.  Apparently if you are prowar, you more likely to see reasons against peace.  That these potential talks are precarious is a given ... we see things against them being reported today here ... any you reported someting in their favor in this article  ... but this indident does not weigh in the balance.   It is charatable for me to say that to think that it does is sloppy reading and/or sloppy writing.

Seth says
It looks as if headlines are getting a new syntax.  Here is another one that uses the same syntax as the headline of this item: "Iraqi PM in Iran as seven die in attack".

Meanwhile, it looks like the Palestinians should drop their weapons and try to clean up some of their own shit!
