What does stay the course really mean?

About: U.S. stifling Iraq insurgency but are not strong enough to defeat it.

source: Marine Maj. Gen. Richard C. Zilmer
"Now, if that mission statement changes if there is seen a larger role for coalition forces out here to win that insurgency fight then that is going to change the metrics of what we need out here," he added.
....
Zilmer would not discuss specifics of the Devlin report, but said he did not want more U.S. troops as long as his mission did not include defeating the insurgency.
i though that their mission was to defeat the insurgency.  Is it just me or does the news that it is not come as a shock to anyone else ?
source: ROBERT BURNS, AP Military Writer
Pentagon officials hastily arranged the interview with Zilmer in response to a series of news reports about a classified report by the chief of intelligence for the Marines in western Anbar province, Col. Pete Devlin. Zilmer said he agreed with the assessment by Devlin, who works for Zilmer, and he did not dispute news reports that characterized it as depicting Anbar as locked in a military stalemate with inadequate political progress.
Thanks to the generals for telling us what is really happening.
Apparently "stay the course" has not meant "win the war" .

Moved from a different item where it was dissonant.

You might understand my items better if you did not interpert them as being said to "make a difference".   I write so to guide my reading.  It works too.  I am 100% more politically aware of what is going on in the world than i was before i started blogging politically.  For me it is an awareness thing.  It is a way of thinking out loud.
Which is fine now that 4407 is no longer about this item.   Some of my nodes express opinions, perhaps strongly, which i have developed.  Other item are designed more for collecting or disseminating facts.  Before commenting on one you may ask yourself which kind of item it is.  If it is a fact item, then posting related facts is more than welcome.  If it is an opinion item, then expressing your own opinion about the exact same subject is also more than welcome.  Poking fun at me on any of my items is almost always inappropriate.  Commenting that i should not become aware of that item or posted it is also something that does not inform me; but making your own items that are more important ... well that will just raise the level of awareness here at fastblobit and will always we well recieved.  Tolerance is the name of the game here.

More about breaking up Iraq into autonomous areas:

This break up plan seems to be getting more and more traction.
source: Sarah Baxter, Washington
AN independent commission set up by Congress with the approval of President George W Bush may recommend carving up Iraq into three highly autonomous regions, according to well informed sources.
... What i would like to see would be a map of the sunni, shea, kurd areas overlaid with a map of the oil producing areas.  Perhaps there is a wise way to draw these boarders.  There is nothing that necessitates that a break up plan exclude a federation of states.  In such a case the federal government is just as strong as it actually is ... wishing that it be stronger doesn't make it so.  But at least that would allow populations that are prone to protect their own the ability to form their own identity.  Forcing enemies together is a setup for conflict.  All of this was brought up prior to adopting the Iraqi constitution and at that time people were advising the process to slow down and consider three states.  Too bad the Bush administration pushed the deadline as more important than the end effect.  Me thinks this is just another example of the current administration thinking that force and military might can make things go the way it is convient for their party.
