U.S. Seeks Silence on CIA Prisons

source: washingtonpost.com
The government, in trying to block lawyers' access to the 14 detainees, effectively asserts that the detainees' experiences are a secret that should never be shared with the public.
...
Gitanjali Gutierrez, an attorney for Khan's family, responded in a court document yesterday that there is no evidence that Khan had top-secret information. "Rather," she said, "the executive is attempting to misuse its classification authority . . . to conceal illegal or embarrassing executive conduct."
I don't know about you, but this is deeply disturbing to me.

Is our friend Seth more worried about digging up some scandal (November Surprise) at the last minute than the security of the country?
I bookmarked this here to track it because i am more worried about the errosion of human rights than i am in protecting the administration from embarassment.  A government that needs to hid its interrogation techniques from scutiny is probably a government that is violating human decency.  If we allow our government to violate human decency, are we any better than what we are fighting? So then, what are we fighting for?  Let the government use strong and effective measures ... but let them do so in the light of day.

Btw, putting words in my mouth is not permitted on my blog.  It just takes too much of my time to refute ... time that would be better spent in delving into the matter at hand.  I suggest that you don't bother, as all phrases that insult, or put words in my mouth that i would not speak myself, will all be deleted in the future, without warning.

Here is another reported sympton of the same problem ...
source: Aljazeera.Net US 'breeding extremism' in Iraq
An Iraqi parliamentary delegation visiting Qatar has accused the US army in Iraq of breeding extremism by carrying out an "irresponsible arrest campaign".

Al-Dulaimi criticised US officials for not fulfilling their promises to him personally and to many members of his bloc.

"In every meeting I have with US officials I repeat my appeal to them to take into consideration that they cannot keep people in prison indefinitely without charges.

"It is just not right and gains them nothing but increasing extremists who spend their days in detention looking forward to one thing, which is to be released one day and to take their revenge.

"They keep reassuring me that they would take action but they never did. They release [a] few dozens and the next day arrest hundreds."
Obviously this report needs to be verified.  But this is where it hurts.  I don't see how the US can call itself spreading freedom and democracy and then not also implement acceptable standards of jurisprudence.
