Importing feeds

I propose that feeds be importable. When you import a feed to some group, you are saying: make every item in the imported feed is also an item in the group. In other words, you assert each item in the feed to the group.

There is a very easy and obvious way to allow these feeds to be imported. Just allow them as media files, either uploaded or on the web when you make an item on the add an item screen
The system will look for these media types and import all items to the group.

This feature has some interesting implicatons about how to move us from here to there. It allows us to work in the current database on items that we want to flow into phase 1 entry to the world. Just before we flush this database, we will ask everyone here to export the feeds that that they want to carry over to the live opening. Then we flush. Then everyone goes back and imports their saved feeds.

Nifty, no ? ....

Nifty , indeed! - need to watchout for spammers, this would be a great tool. If the input is accepted only from previous exports from FastBlogIt - then probably not much of a problem.

Seth says
Why restrict it ? It is useful that someone could use their external feed from another blog .. say our competition ... and import it here. I think that nifty feature far outweighs any potential harm involved in allowing foreign feeds. Don't forget, they cannot import a feed into your group unless they know the password for your group.

Another side effect that comes to be because of the way we are doing it here is that the item that was created when you imported the feed becaomes can be used to describe in some way those items that got imported from it. I'm not quite shure where it goes in here or in the feed but the potential is there.

i must admit that my greatest fear for FastBlogIt is that it will begin to look like the spam in my email - ~ 90% spam now. I am also concerned about the chinese spam that defaced my wiki. The Common Stream will be useless if you insert 30 spam messages at a time - or 100 - whichever you finally open up.

I know. Perhaps you should make an item of that and tag it ".1fear". I only hope that this is popular enough to get us to the point where we can solve that problem. The solution to the problem is in the social domain and since we have built this to be the ultimate in socal networking, me thinks a solution will emerge. Don't forget sensoring (i think that is or should be in the .xwish list somewhere) ! When the "in group" taggs a item with "~whatever" and people learn to click those exclusions into their cookies, that so called spam will dissapear from view.

do we have exclusions somewhere ?
