Here is my dangerous idea:

Someday the holy grail of competition will give way to a new grail of cooperation. This will be brought about by something less painful than a Childhoods End invasion of extraterrestrials, but will be more painful than some wars.

The pain of such a transition will exhibit itself in the economic sphere first, personal level last & somewhere in the middle will be competition amongst countries & other institutions for power.

Viva the revolution, involution & evolution of such a transformation!

Well mankind is certainly faced with challenges which threaten our survinal, the solutions of which have not, and will not yeild, to the old zero sum "grail of competition" .... global warming, end of cheep energy, clash of cultures (middle east), etc. A global hive mind is a scary thing to contemplate ... the Internet itself just as scary, yet we are used to it now and it still has the dewey feels of a new grail and very little of the horror story of Childhoods End.

But what is scary is religating the solution and decisions on these matters to the single channel of one individual ... now that is scary !

Hmmm... I don't see a hive mind nor one-person rule (nor Bush-bashing) as in the transformation from competition to cooperation. Competition for power underlies the problems of

... not cooperation. Switch from one mode to the other & you will find that most of the problems become opportunities to much easier solutions. A little golden rule helps along the way. Competition vs cooperation is just the individual interest vs group interests.

BTW, what's scary about the internet besides the occasional picture of some coprophagia ?

Wired had an interesting article today on What We Don't Know - fits in this item. Some of my favorites are:

& many others...

They also have an interesting collaborative wiki ( http://www.socialtext.com with a clean RTE ) to edit each of the items as per this example on the proof of Riemann Hypothesis.

These guys may think that ivory tower scientists & thinkers can solve all the world's problems which ain't going to happen, however entertaining good questions by people who put their minds to it in the context of "a synergy of individuals" might be a good start.

Mark, as i have said numerous times, i am interested in rational controlled dialogue that follows some rules. But you never agree to do it ... and you never do it yourself. So i have given up any hope that will ever happen between us. That has always been a great sadness for me.
