The wrong question ...

source: Press Briefing by Tony Snow
Q Just to be clear, do you believe that a non-binding resolution that opposes a troop increase, does that provide comfort to the enemy?

MR. SNOW: I don't know. I think -- the question again is, does this send a signal that the United States is divided on the key element of success in Iraq. And I will let members of Congress express themselves, because I'm sure they're going to say, no, we're committed to success, and then they can elucidate on that point.

It is interesting how the administration is framing this debate.  If you buy into Tony Snow's assumption here, you have already lost.  If you are committed to success in Iraq, then you are committed to forcing a people to accept a government by dint of military might.  To make any progress in this dialogue it is that assumption that must be challenged.  I hope the democrats that we have sent to Washington are up to that challenge!

Get well soon!  The only thing that is being forced is the insurgents, terrorists & Islamists to lose.  The election did not invite them into the government - your distorted thinking notwithstanding!

Not my reading of the situation.  The only thing that is being forced to win is the Maliki government which, on the one hand is dominated by the Shia theocracy, and on the other hand just happens to be pledged to be a ally of the USA.  There is no way that a military operation will change the mind of a single terrorist, insurgent, or Islamist.  Rather the opposite ... it will create more of the same.

Sorry i can't figure out what that is supposed to mean.

In fact you are wrong! The minds of every terrorist, insurgent or Islamist instantantly changes when they die & start looking for those promised virgins!

... the election in Iraq.
The people in Iraq did not vote for terrorists, insurgents nor theocrats.  In fact the government executives are Kurd, Shia & possibly Sunni.  It is not a monolithic government.

Trying to eliminate Islamist, terrorists and insurgents by killing them all is like trying to clean up the world by scrubbing it with Mr Clean.

Here is another trend that should feed into predictions ...

Muqtada told his followers, the ones high up in the hierarchy to leave to Syria or Iran. Until things calm down. I have also heard from people here, that some militia members are hiding their cache of weapons and moving down South. Hmmm, so basically everyone is gonna be gone. Then reappear once again when the offensive is over.
There is no end to this surge ... there is no win in Iraq ... there is no victory.

It just dawned on me what a non-contradictory war script for Iraq would look like.   (1) Continue with the Kegan plan to clear and hold Baghdad (2) Hold the Maliki government to their pledge to the benchmarks and clearing up the Baghdad probelms by November.   Then add to that a stated consequence if they do not follow through (3) ... that being that the US will reoccupy Baghdad and impose a secular government there.  Then if we prop up that government, at least we will not have joined in a contradictory bind with the very forces that we are ostensibly fighting.

This, of course, is not a script that i advocate.  But it is a non-contradictory script for winning in Iraq.

Oh really?  Then why did they chant Shia sectarian taunts while they hanged Saddam?   The majority of people in Iraq voted for their sect and that is the government that the administration is forced to support.  The majority of people in iraq did not vote for secular rule ... they simply did not vote for those candidates ... they did not choose them.  Eventually the US will withdraw and the Maliki government will fall in favor of a Shia theocracy.  You cannot change these people at the point of a gun.  It is immoral even to try.
