Why is it so cheep in Denver?  Yesterday i boutht gass ... it was about $2.50/gal.

Realist says
The price of gasoline varies according to how far you are from a refinery, the local government mandated environmental additives & their availability, & local tax policy. With the terminator's environmentalist ass-kissing in California look forward to a boost in taxes on gasoline there. Washington may already have such problems.  I don't think Colorado has so many additives.  There is a Conoco refinery near Denver. The price also varies according to the region, demand, and the amount of driving that goes on.  The more government involvement the higher the price of gas. Oil companies make about 6 cents on the gallon. The rest is the cost of raw product, transportation, refining & additives. After that there are taxes. Look at your oil pump prices & see how much is federal, state & local taxes. If congress tries to pass a windfall profits or other form of disincentive by the Democrats look forward to much higher gas prices & dependence upon foreign oil.  Make it unprofitable to drill for new oil & add burdensome environmental restrictions & that's what you will get.  Enjoy!

Personally i hope the price of gass goes through the roof.   Yesterday there was a NPR story about an all electric car that Google is investing in.  California is going in the right direction .
Those who have no responsibility for the outcome can say anything. I hope the price increases remain local to Renton.

Yep, at $95,000 at a range of 250 mi & a recharge rate of 3.5 hrs it might be a bargain for you.  I also saw something similar on the Science Channel. The cost was $100,000, recharge of 4 hrs and a range of 100 miles, but it has a very small gas engine for emergency charging.    It's going to have to get more real before I would wish gasoline to be $10/gal.

Google has money to burn. Perhaps they are looking for their own "iPod" .

Yep these things start high and come down as more and more people purchace them.  A range of 250mi and recharge in just 3.5 hours is practical for almost all of normal usage.  It might mandate that for cross country trips one stops in the middle of the day and has a extended lunch as their car rechanges ... one sees these stopover places becomming famous ... every disadvantage carries with it an oppurtunity.  What i found interesting is that a company like Google would be investing in it.

BTW, the electric car still uses electricity which is mostly based on burning things except for the nuclear power plants & wind & solar - not yet practical for the whole country.

Here is some more information on new batteries ...
source: Technology Review
The company boldly claims that its system, a kind of battery-ultracapacitor hybrid based on barium-titanate powders, will dramatically outperform the best lithium-ion batteries on the market in terms of energy density, price, charge time, and safety. Pound for pound, it will also pack 10 times the punch of lead-acid batteries at half the cost and without the need for toxic materials or chemicals, according to the company.

I think it is a matter of rooting for a new technology that has the potential to solve the problem.  Hydrogen does not seem to fill the bill.  Ethanol is just more or the same.  Nobody expects millions of these cars to instantly appear on the roads next year, but advances in efficient batteries and companies seriously fielding production vehicles are certainly good news.

Seth says
One example of how to root for technology to solve the problem is this sugestion by CEOs of big business: "Leaders from GE to Lehman Bros. suggest lawmakers adopt mandatory, market-driven legislative solution". Another good sign is rolling back billions of dollars in oil industry subsidies which were supposed to be used to develop alternate energy ... kind of like paying the fox to gurad the hen house.  Instead those inducements shold be going to the battery companies etc.

Mark de LA says
I see nothing wrong with hydrogen (except perhaps the Hindenberg effect). It burns producing only water as a byproduct. OTOH, it still requires electricity to produce. A NASA sized intensive effort in partnership with industry might get the job done. Pissing on big oil won't get the job done & will just line politicians pockets & placate envy.

Yep it tends to explode and is about the least efficient energy storage method known to man.  The batteries proposed above are far more efficient.  Also it requires totally retooling all the service stations ... with an electric car all you need is an outlet.  Hydrogen is not looking good ... i bet against it.

I seem to remember reading it somplace.  There is more info re the EEStor battery in Technology review.  Here is the patient ... EEStor does not seem to have much about it at their website, if in fact www.esstor.com is their website.

Re the argument that the electricity needs to be generated, probably by fossel fuel anyway,  ... we see this quote over at BoingBoing: "By some estimates, it would only require $9 worth of electricity for an EESU-powered vehicle to travel 500 miles, versus $60 worth of gasoline for a combustion-engine car."  If this pans out it will be quite a breakthrough and a step in the right direction, but the guys over at Technology review are still skeptical.

Sam's club and Costco has a membership that prolly won't pay for the few pennies.  The ARCO on 140th has a .50 surcharge for credit cards.  Covington is too far.  It was $2.11 at the place where i usually buy gas.  But inevitably i'll loose the bet.  I've taken to filling up just half of the tank because prices are dropping so fast.
