Was the Osama/Sadam connection manufactured, or not?

Mr. Rumsfeld and his deputy, Paul D. Wolfowitz authorized the Pentagon to develope, produce and then disseminate to senior decision-makers "alternative intelligence assessments on the Iraq and Al Qaeda relationship, which included some conclusions that were inconsistent with the consensus of the Intelligence Community".  These reports formed the basis for the administration's key pre-war claim that Saddam Hussein might provide weapons of mass destruction to the terrorist group.

Update 3/10/2007  There appears to be quite a contraversy about the facts of this case.   My paragraph above may need to be revised.  I've changed this item from a spin item to a fact finding item.  The report in  question was prepared by former Undersecretary of Defense Douglas Feith (pictured here) at the time when the administration was trying to make the case for war.  You can read, and listen, to what Faith actually says about the report here.

Update 4/6/2007: The Washington Post reports today that Saddam's prewar ties to Al-Qaeda have been discounted by a  Pentagon Report, declassified yesterday, which says that contacts were limited.  Feith had this information, yet his office supplied briefings containing erroneous interpretations to the administration's top people.  This is at the heart of the lie that Bush told the American people and Congress.  It seems to me that Feith, or his superiors, crossed a  line here between professional intelligence interpretation and criminal behavior.  If so, they should be prosecuted.

The other side of the argument from Andrew McCarthy is here should you want to crawl out of your pre-conceptions of everyone lied.
Let's be fair here ... "that Rumsfield, Wolfowitz, Cheney, and Bush lied" is just the propoganda headline.  What are we saying substantive behind that propoganda headline?  Just that we now know the end points: (1) there was no credible intelligence that Saddam was collaborating with Al Queda prior to the ivasion, yet (2) Bush and Chaney told the American people and the UN that there was. The Feith report gives us a point in the process.  I deerly want to see the actual report ... too bad it will probably never be shown to the American people.  But apparently it shows us where the administration and pentagon were questioning the facts on the ground and the interpertations and and analysis of those facts.  It is a step in the process which ended up manufacturing the opposite of the truth and then publishing that as if it were truth.  That is the complaint form the Democrats.  And it is a valid complaint.

McCarthy's article, which i read in detail, uses a rather twisted logic to avoid dealing with that particular complaint.  First he quotes the already discredited events as if to still lend them crediance ... then he uses the current Baathists confederation with jihadists to imply that something similar would have developed between Al Queda and Saddam, notwistanding that it never did.  He then sites the common sense notion that to question intelligence will make it stronger, to imply that the administration was justified in manufacturing as existant relationships, which were not.  No, Mark, this article is spin and only spin.

To me, the only valid "other side of the argument" is to actually publish the Feith report.  And then publish the oval office dialog that happened in 2002 or 2003  about it.   Such a unabashed  honesty would be totally refreshing.  Sans that kind of honesty, we can only assume the worst.

Here is how the story looked in 2002 when the case was being made for the invasion ...

The Pentagon is collecting evidence of "linkage" between Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda organization and other international terror groups to bolster its case for attacking Iraq as part of the war on terrorism, Bush administration officials say.

The Pentagon set up a secret unit shortly after September 11 to scan years of highly classified intelligence reports to find links between groups supported by Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and bin Laden's al Qaeda network.

The project officers are also examining whether Iraqi business fronts for the country's intelligence service have ties to bin Laden. Sources say ...

"It's an abject lie, and it is completely ignores what is in the documented public record," Larry C. Johnson, a former State Department and CIA counterterrorism official, said in an interview Sunday. "I think the problem is across the board that we have convenient memory loss. No one wants to go back and hold people accountable to what they were doing."

On his blog, No Quarter (noquarter.typepad.com), Johnson wrote Sunday that Feith repeatedly had claimed such a relationship, particularly in a still-classified memo dated Oct. 27, 2003, and sent to the leadership of the Senate Intelligence Committee. The 16-page memo was later leaked to a conservative magazine. The resulting article was later cited by Cheney as "the best source of information" on Al Qaeda-Iraq ties.
... and here is one version of that leaked memo:
source: leaked Memo that appeared in the Weekly Standard
OSAMA BIN LADEN and Saddam Hussein had an operational relationship from the early 1990s to 2003 that involved training in explosives and weapons of mass destruction, logistical support for terrorist attacks, al Qaeda training camps and safe haven in Iraq, and Iraqi financial support for al Qaeda--perhaps even for Mohamed Atta
... which was refered to by Cheney as "the best source of information".  Me, i like to cut through all the after-the-fact he-said-she-said:  Where is all this intelligence that lead Feith's department to write such a memo?

... given 17 different intelligence agencies on thousands of data points it would appear that some disagreement is expectable.  How you spin that is your prejudice. If someone looked at our conversations they might find some differences of opinion too!
Something more interesting is:
source: ...

Zarqawi, whom Cheney depicted yesterday as an agent of al-Qaeda in Iraq before the war, was not then an al-Qaeda member but was the leader of an unaffiliated terrorist group who occasionally associated with al-Qaeda adherents, according to several intelligence analysts. He publicly allied himself with al-Qaeda in early 2004, after the U.S. invasion.

...so... before the war he was just a nice guy & suddenly after we invaded he became Al Queda in Iraq, eh?

IMHO, new does not necessarily mean news. See 6670 for clarification.
I wonder why Sen. Levin dug it up & was eager to get it unclassified & published today & why the Democrats won't let the idea that there were no terrorists in Iraq go ?

Probably because there were no terrorists in Iraq prior to our invasion, the administration's attempt to promote the opposite notwithstanding.  If you think about this with an open mind, don't you arrive at an understanding that it is not in a dictator's best interest to allow other power factions to exist in his country?

Abu Nidal was a terrorist.  He was living in Iraq before 9-11.
So what ... there are terrorists living in US now ... they are probably living in every country on the face of the Earth.  That does not mean that they are supported by the governments of those countries.  Nor did it excuse or necessitate our invasion.

Well I say SO WHAT? to this entire partisan node.  If you are one who wants to buy into the Bush Lied to get the US into the Iraq War crowd no amount of evidence will persuade you otherwise! (already demonstrated). You & I both are so far removed from first line evidence that this blog is a mere sparring ring for the RWG 4413 withstanding.

Actually facts would persuade me otherwise .... randomly changing the topic to scrore partisan points will not.  Maybe it doesn't bother you that the administration manufactured most of the reasons to go into this disasterous war, but it bothers me ... it bothers me a lot.

Caught in an endless loop of the RWG? flush it!
Sorry that ending will not be allowd here ... move it or loose it.   It is beneath the threshold of permitted hyprocracy for someone to engage a long sequence of uninformative RWG and then end by calling RWG.  The permitted way to end a RWG loop on my blog is to simply stop responding.  In fact the first one to stop responding to RWG on my blog WINS !
