Hacking Photographs

Two articles in Wired relate to the subject:

You can also look at the famous Reuters fake photos during the Hezbollah-Israel war if you need more recent clues.

As far as any proof goes a photograph, indeed a digital photograph, is far less valuable than an actual living eyeball on the subject. And even a photograph has a point of view.  That which is not in the photograph is just as important as that which is within. Currently videos and photographs are used both to chronicle the past & to manipulate the feelings of the viewer toward some purpose.  The scientific method has little to do with either endeavor nor much to do with a search for the truth. Actually, the scientific method has the notion of reproducibility  in it which history doesn't have.   Said another way - because I have a photograph or several of something does not mean I have the truth about any event. And, just because I have a photograph or video of an event does not guarantee that I have the meaning of the event either.

There is also the consideration of the proportionality effect.  If one puts pictures of crying orphans or the relatives of victims gnashing their teeth with open mouths screaming to Allah it has an effect. If a publication produces such pictures often relative to their occurrence one could say that publication is biased. The magnifying glass (or the microscope) is every bit as important to hacking the brain, probably more so, as is the media megaphone & the bully pulpit.

In fact you can probably ignore 90% of the news & stories & commentary about the news as being irrelevant to a well-balanced life. As Emeril Lagasse in his cooking show so often quotes:
Emeril: ... If the fish smells - go for the lamb!
... (think about it!)

I don't understand the implications of this item nor its connection to 6335.  Photographs and other digital imagery are evidence of what happened.  That this evidance can be altered or composed with bias is no justification for their deletion; because that something can be done, has no bearing on whether it will be done.  A better way to fight biased digital imagery is to record other digital imagery that can refute any alterations or biases.

I'm sure that you have no desire for our military to unnecessarily kill and wound innocent civilians.  How are we to insure that does not happen if the military is allowed to screen out any evidance of such killings?
Put this comment back on your item.  This item is about hacking photographs. The cursory mention of your 6335 was just in passing a remark about the intrigue that surrounds photographs or lack therof;  being consistent with the purpose of this group.

Good idea, not easily implimented!   Another side of the coin is to educate the human to have an inquiring mind & a healthy sense for bullshit! Don't believe everything you see on the internet or TV or in a newspaper.

It's actually easier to take your own pictures than it is to delete them from others cameras.  It also produces a better result.

If there is a story about orphans crying, is a digital picture of those specific orphans crying not an essential part of the story?
I've never seen a story about orphans crying.  The closest that something comes to that is the Christian Children's Fund advertizements on TV.  OTOH, a lot of the Darfur articles on the  genocide (caused by the muslims) seems to show crying orphans & famished, displaced inhabitants. What would be the relevance of crying orphans to the actual genocide ? IMHO, crying orphans, however sad, are there to juice up readership & action & sympathy.

Instant replays & imbedded photographers is a hell of a way to run a war.

In case you didn't notice i used your example above: "If one puts pictures of crying orphans or the relatives of victims gnashing their teeth with open mouths screaming to Allah it has an effect.".  A more pertinant example is given in 6335.

Sorry, I have lost interest in that item as a propaganda item.

Google feed on the UN interest in the genocide in Darfur can be subscribed to here.  The feed is nice in that you can follow the progress without having to wait for a blogger to digest it for you !                (  P.S. I am still getting updates on the story about the Dubai port scandle which, due to the international finance cloud of murk,  still is murky! )
