Comment spam may be our biggest challenge early on

About: comment spam - Google Search

The primary restraint on comment spam is that there will be a option on the group to disallow comments by people outside of the group.

Might have additional option to allow comments only from members signed on to some named group. IOW, one could not comment unless one had made their own group here or knew the password to sign on to some other group. Might need disallow open groups here for obvious reasons.

That doesn't solve the problem for groups who want to allow comments by anyone. This is a very desireable feature. I hate it when i need to sign up with something just to make a comment.

The secondary restraing on spam is gonna be strategies designed by the webmaster to identify spam and delete it.

IMHO one man's blog is another man's spam

Mark de LA says
spam is essentially anything i don't want to see or read - just like junk mail. webmaster can censor as ~spam tag

Seth says
reasonable humans will agree on what is spam and what is not spam

Mark de LA says
as will unreasonable humans - probably just a different set of humans & spam

Seth says
then there is tag spam ... like tagging this ~spam were "~spam" to become to mean something that the website has considered to actually be spam.

Seth says
but this item is about comment spam and not comment spam ... i may actually expermint with trying to keep the discussion here on topic

Mark de LA says
the tag spam or ~spam will be of value when exclusions get implemented

Seth says
... yes i agree, but that is off topic and is a mis tag of this item

Seth says
Comment spam is something that has been plaguing blogs ... those who have run high traffic blogs know what i am talking about ... suggested reading about this is off the about on this item

Seth says
here is a diagram of the current state of the art of comment spam

Seth says
we have the moderate comments aspect of this just in the ability of a group to delete comments

Seth says
it is the automated aspects of this ... in the diagram simply called "ip blacklist" that needs further research

Mark de LA says
comments still have to be entered one at a time as long as you disallow automated RSS entry of comments.

Seth says
... no, most spam comments, i believe, are posted by bots ... ones in your wiki were prolly done by botts

Seth says
Thing i am worred about is that because comments are so easy to enter here, that as soon as we get just a little bit of traffic, the comment spamers will go wild. It would soon overwhelme a groups ability to delete them. The website must implement some agressive strategies to automatically identify and delete spam. What exactly are those stratagies to be ? What are the patterns of comment spam that can be identified automatically ?

Seth says
right now, hopefully the spammers are not listening, all you need do is post the correct format of data to the /update/ url ... it is easy for a spammer to discover that jut by viewing the source

Seth says
form action="/update/" method="post" ... read down further for the variables

Seth says
to allow anyone to post a comment, means that /update/ does not even look for a cookie ... that is the kind of thing that has to be changed ... perhaps before we open ... i dont know how serious this is ... but want to plan for it now

Seth says
(1) one thing that emerges here is that i need to write some kind of cookie on the first comment ... that cookie stratagy may form the basis of controling comment spam

unknown says
could also put a limit on the number of bytes from one terminal if things get out of hand.
