Divide and rule - America's plan for Baghdad

Here is another misdirection.  The misdirection is stated in the byline:
source: Robert Fisk
Revealed: a new counter-insurgency strategy to carve up the city into sealed areas.
... [emphasis mine].  But there is nothing here that has been newly Revealed.   I first reported on this as the Kagan plan for success in 5507 last winter and the Counterinsurgancy manual,  from which Fisk extensively quotes, bears a publication date of December 2006.  Then IRNA picks up this warmed over news, that has been truned into spin and publishes it with the headline: "US to divide Baghdad into gated communities, says UK daily".

On the other hand Fisk is an award winning journalist who has been in the Middle East reporting on the gritty realities of the conflict there for over 30 years.  I did not know that when i started this item. At B&N i found his book in the History section: "The Great War For Civilization: The Conquest of the Middle East", which i managed to skim last night.  It is a weighty toom and tells a depressing story but one that is quite credible.  Now i must buy it.

I said that to say that perhaps we should take a second look at some of the things that Fisk is saying in his article ... be not quite so fast to be pikey about him calling something newly revealed that was merely old news to me.

The question that i raise now in this group is how much "artistic licence" is a journalists or a historian allowed?

At one point in the beginning of this group I built a lot of stuff in a wiki.  The main thesis was to automatically digest the news into a database & return the complete & relevant information with queries.  The idea needs work, but ultimately a pull rather than a push process would work out.  Work from the vision of the group & start to design processes & ways to fulfill the vision.  Other ways will leave the novice frustrated.  Complaining about what is rather than moving toward what can be leads back to more of the same.

Well me thinks we need to work out how we humans can grok things without bias, or perhaps even with bias but at least with the intention to discover truth regardless of that bias.  Without knowing how we can do it, i haven't the faintest idea how to even start on programing a computer to do it.  That is why all of my proposals directed at the same purpose as you have stated for this group are targeted at improving the human process of discovering truth and correcting viewpoint.

Btw, the body of this item contains what might be a good example ... too bad you missed it ... more about that later.

You are right about the human changes.  The beginning of the thread of this group, from the old wiki to which you contributed, is Unhack The Brain.  I still find it to be a good anchor point.
The article you cite in the body & the other references are interesting.  I am surprised that the field manual is not classified.  Why publish your strategy to the enemy? Though, I suspect that it is the tactics that must be kept secret.
BTW, I don't see anything that is sufficient unto a cause celebre for group UnhackTheBrain within the article yet.

I think Fisk is just advertizing.

Apparently dividing Baghdad into "gated communities" is actually happening ...
source: Al Jazeera
Meanwhile, US soldiers were building a five kilometre-long wall to protect a Sunni enclave, Adhamiya, which is surrounded by Shia neighbourhoods and "trapped in a spiral of sectarian violence and retaliation," the military said.
Now don't get me wrong, im not saying that is wrong ... but this report today does lend credance to Robert Fisks's piece.  What i am saying is that the complaint that inspired this item has now, imho, been thoroughly debunked.  Now perhaps we can use this item to track the effect of walling the city.

The walled city has apparently worked for the Jews in Israel - mostly stopped the suicide bombings in the past couple of years.  The challenge then comes when Iran supplies one side with rockets as has been done with Hezbollah.
Problem with a wall is that it is fixed in time and space ... it is not a flexible stratagey to be used against an intelligent adapting enemy.  Like you say ... just go over the wall with rockets ... there are other ways too. A wall might work against  unintelligent  chaos ... but i doubt that is what we are dealing with here.  As to its success in Israel, i would need to study that before sigining off on it.
