Seth's Notebook

Google Notebook is  kewl .

I've been using Google Notebook for a couple of days now and it has served to enhanse my failing memory.  It is superior in some senses to my bookmarking behaviors in FireFox where i had been creating a very large set of bookmarks structured down to 3 or 4 heirachies and ordered as a push down list.  That system had problems (1) it was subject to being lost if something went wrong with fire fox ... that has already happened several times (2) it is not full text searchable (3) i cannot easily highlight portions of text from different pages.  Notebook solves, for me, all three of those problems.  I'll continue to use this new tool and keep you apprased of how it is working for me.

We have a much better system of nested notes & conversations about a cited item.  I prefer to keep track in fbi of things I want to preserve.

I don't look at nobebook as a publishing/dialogue place ... rather as a quick cut and paste place ... as such it is much faster ... count the mouse strokes.  Lots of times i dont want to make any public comment on something ... but i may want to consider it in context of other things i am looking at and perhaps (perhaps not) comment on it later ... in those cases just bookmarking it has a very limited ability because you can't easily select out the text of the item that drew your attention ... but with google notebook you can.

Hmmm..
Was I just too sensitive in interpreting your phrase "...shut your mouth & go do something" perhaps?
yep that may have been the problem ... seems that this hypersensitivity is going around these days ... for therapy i suggest listening to Sherly Crow ... "Everybody gets high, everybody gets low,These are the days when anything goes"  ... or  perhaps "Everyday is a Winding Road".

Opera had such a feature built into their browser a couple of years ago although not shareable.  I don't use Opera anymore because it is incompatable with fbi.  If you use it for private purposes why share it.  At least fbi has that option to select or not select private.  Slowing down the speed of collection sometimes also slows down the knee-jerk responses (& sometimes not).  I still like us better! Kudos to the . Someday a great leap in the evolution of browsers (& maybe some more at fbi) will have most of this stuff built in. Tabs is a good start. Maybe fbi will have a single signon ID someday (to all authorized groups) & a way to immediately send something to it from a viewed webpage via some portal (RSS?).
Anyway, I am still trying to move away from being a hunter-gatherer to a creator & innovator - see [my rant: item 6831] &  3635 which failed so far to gain much traction. The former one I exposed from private this AM. The thrill of opinionating pales in contrast to that of creating in my book.

You know everybody chooses their own tools and mechinishms and creates their own way of grokin the universe.  It is good that these are all different and we don't all use the same ones.  I discovered Nobebook yesterday and i am not at all sure that it will be a continuing toole in my mechinisms of awareness.  It is superior in some senses to what i have been doing ... creating a very large set of bookmarks structured now down to 3 or 4 heirachies and ordered as a push down list.  That system has problems (1) it is subject to being lost if something goes wrong with fire fox ... that has already happened several times (2) it is not easily searchable (3) i cannot easily highlight portions of text from different pages.  Notebook solves, for me, all three of those problems.

Btw, i am a hunter gatherer with no apologies ... i call it awareness.  Everything in your mind is a relationship and not a fact, if you want facts shut your mouth and go do something. For me, being aware is a prerequisite for doing something ... which unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) i perpetually procrastinate .

Was not in the RWG on hunter-gathering, was just making my preference known.  If I held it as wrong, I wouldn't blog at all. Everything in my mind is not a relationship. Shutting my mouth and/or doing something has nothing to do with wanting facts it's just an ad hominem statement.

Wow, you sure zigged there instead of zagging ... what i said was not RWG and you should not have interperted it as such ... i was not saying or critizizing what you said at all ... perhaps you could go back and reread what i did say with the assumption that it was not intended to be "against" what you said.

I get that you are moving "away from being a hunter-gatherer to a creator & innovator" espccially as you have just noted it in 6831 on which i may comment later.  And obviously (though perhaps not to you yet) i respect such a move aboslutely.   But at the same time i make no apologies for my own hunter gather behavior.  Can you not see that is not a critizism of your current intent?

Btw, everything in your mind is a relationship and not a fact.  That may just be a semantic confusion between us or it may be a real difference in philosophical choice ... but in any case it was not brought up with the intention of showing that i am right and you are wrong.   "Doing is how facts are created" ... think about it  ... if you disagree then perhaps we could discuss it on its's own item.

My Google Notebook is panning out to be a useful tool.  One thing i am trying is using it to sanitize wild html selected from the web to paste in my blog instead of using windows Notepad ... I'll let you know how it pans out ... 7208 was made that way.  One problem that i have not totally groked is that Google Notebook seems to be just making a larger and larger page ... that was not my intention ... i would much prefer them ageing the stack into multiple pages ... perhaps there is some way to do that but i have not discovered it yet.

I use Google toolbar.  If you go to either Manage all bookmarks or go to your email page you have acces to both notes & bookmarks. I use fbi for more intense research & use bookmarks only for articles I don't want to lose track of. I haven't used notebook for a long time.  I use IE7 most of the time so FF is not a problem. I don't know if bookmarks are sharable, but I suspect there is a way.

Well yes your right the google bookmark page does display the entire comment.  It might even be superior to notebook because it allows tags.  But i don't see where it allows shearing.  I'll probably try it.  It's either that or go back to delicious.

Too bad, this is being phased out.  The latest Firefox 3.5 does not contain an update for the tool.
source: Google

Google recently stopped development on Notebook, which means it is no longer being improved upon or open to sign-ups by new users.

If you're visiting notebook for the first time, instead try exploring other Google products that are still supported. For example, if you're trying to jot down some quick notes or create a document that you can share with others, check out Google Docs. And Google Bookmarks lets you remember web pages that you liked and access them easily.

... I guess i'll need to find a replacement.  This has become an essential part of my web reading behavior.
I use google bookmarks which is just about the same thing.
I don't see how bookmarks will work for me.  It does allow you to paste notes from the article but is much more tedious to do so.  Then too you cannot see those notes unless you actually visit the book mark - again way to tedious for the way i have been operating.  With notebook all i do is select text and right click to save it.  I can then view all of my clippings on one page and thereby remember why i was interested in the article. Did i miss something that you are doing to get this on google bookmarks?  Which particular bookmark gadget are you using ... there were several?
