Our Diet

Denise and I have been on the Beverly Hills diet for the past couple of weeks.  I kind of like it since it is mostly fruit ... and i am loosing weight even though that was not my primary objective.  My feels better too.

You can watch our progress here

Update: 6/21/2009 - After about 2 years we are continuing another diet.  Although now it is not so much the Beverly Hills diet ... but i did pick up on her love of pineapple.  For me now, this is principally prunes in the morning and only one mid day meal - which I look forward to cooking each day.  Thing is to learn how to like being hungry.  I've been on this for couple of months and have already dropped from 258 to 220.  Btw, lots of my aches and pains have gone away now that i am not carrying around so much weight.  My goal is 199.  I should be there this fall.

This is what the chart looks like today.  I'm in blue, Denise is in red.

My goal is 199.  I should be there this fall.
That goal has been met this 3rd day of fall 2009.

Next goal is 190.  I should be there by my birthday.

This is what the Beverly Hills Diet does to your kitchen ...

It is interesting that i could take up my Google charting after over 2 years leaving it untouched  without missing a beat. Kudos Google.

Seth says
Yesterday we both ate just pineapple, both lost over a pound.

Seth says
Yesterday just ate mango, and walked along the Green River trail for about an hour, both lost over a pound.  Today is going to be spaghetti with meat sauce plus cold slaw and garlic toast .. don't expect to loose all that very much if anything, but it's going to be delicious.

Yesterday ate my signature breakfast for mid day meal plus prunes in the morning and chocolate fudge ice cream sunday in afternoon ... LOL lost about a pound, go figure.
If you measure your weight every day you sometimes end up with water swings, particularly in the Summer. Weekly measurements are usually more accurate for weight loss progress.

Yep i agree, but i do measure the same time every day and after taking my morning pee.  It does seems to give me some feedback on what i ate the previous day.  Today is going to be all pineapple and maybe a poached pear dessert which i am looking forward to making.  I expect to loose but perhaps wont loose very much because today's reading seemed to be an anomaly and tomorrow i expect to solidify myself at 217.  I do ack that my mentations on this are unscientific ... but hey leave me my illusions ... they are part of the fun.

You may be just in time a new news front hints that taxing fat may not be that far away. Is this news wave a creation of those who are looking to fund Obama's health care trillion$$$? Demonizing cigarettes in the name of health care costs got the lawsuits going against Big Tobacco. Now are they after Big Soda?  You're safe, though - I don't think they will go after Big Pineapple!
Well i couldn't find any "hints of taxing fat" in the front ... but hey it might be a good idea.  Thing is how would you enforce it?  LOL, nope, never happen.

The poached pears were great ... might add them to my repertory.  Thing is a certain person just had to have ice cream last night ... so i didn't get a good feel of how just the pears would  affect my weight.  They do require a lot of honey ... maybe i can cut that down.  It makes a great fat free desert.

They don't tax the fat, silly they tax the soda & they sue Big Soda. See this article in the WSJ. They already add a tax for the plastic bottles in some states.

In all this heat ... it was 105 at Sea-Tac, an all time record ... i was not hungry, so i didn't eat anything, except of course my morning prunes.  Lost 2 pounds yesterday.  I might extend the fast to another day ... we will see.

Seth says
Well lost a bit on my tuna casserole dinner with applesauce.  Remember to use only 3/4 cup pasta next time in casserole.  Tonight is Jason's birthday dinner at olive garden, expect gain.

Seth says
yep, extended my fast another day and lost over a pound again.  Today we have a mid day meal scheduled.  Baked potato with sour cream and a chef's salad.  I have some Bing cherries and pasta  shells that i may try to render into cherry tarts.  I don't expect to loose weight today.   People ask me: What's the rush?  I think i'll just say that i'm into it.  It makes the food taste better.

Seth says
Fasted yesterday and lost back my gains for the previous days.  This evening mother in law is coming for visit so menu will change quite a bit.  This is probably my last dramatic loss, expect small gains for a couple of weeks. Perhaps today we will have grilled pineapple and experiment with some kind of balsamic vinegar glaze.

Seth says
After grandma left we have gotten serious again and lost over a pound each on a pineapple day.  Today is going to be a mango day.  Tomorrow i cook .. pineapple glazed chicken meatballs with cabbage ... am trying to make that one of my signature plates.

Lost another pound on my pineapple day.  Today i cooked Corn and Shrimp Chowder with Bacon and Fennel and Cabbage Slaw on the side, we'll see tomorrow whether i'm gonna gain on that dish.
Wow, actually lost a pound on the Chowder dish; but that i took a  hour long brisk walk along the Cedar river trail may have contributed.   Today is watermelon all day under recommendation from MR. If i can manage that and take another long walk, then i might be down 2 pounds tomorrow.

How did the watermelon day go?
Lost .4 of a pound on the watermelon.  Problem was i also ate a half cantaloupe just before bed and that was probably still with me the next day, plus i didn't get much exercise that day. I was surprised that the very next day i remained at 207.  The more important figure is probably the 5 pounds that i lost since the prior Monday.  Today had a salad, one of grandma's kishes and tonight am planning strawberry shortcake.  Tomorrow prolly pig out, but who knows ... these things have to be negoitated with the better half.

Seth says
Lost 2 pounds in the last couple of days with a combination of pinapple days and Cantalope with Orange Sherbet.   Today i cook Orange Chicken and Orzo with Cucumber Fennel Salad

Seth says
I lost over 3 pounds in the last 3 days since the pig out at the BBQ on Monday, eating only fruit and walking about an hour/day.  Today i cook ... Breaded Chicken and Vegetables ... pictures at mid day.  The objective with this meal is at least not to gain.

Seth says
Well lost almost a pound on my breaded chicken and vegitables meal with a 1 1/2 hour walk down the hill to downtown Renton.  Denise, who didn't take the walk, remained the same weight.  Proving again that you can eat a decent meal and with exercise still loose weight.

Seth says
I notice i gain weight faster than i loose it.  Oh well, going to climb down the hill again this week.

Seth says
On my Tuna noodle Casserole and Apple Sauce meal, i lost .7 of a pound.  We both walked 3 miles, briskly.  Denise gained .6 because she ate a lot of potato chips ... too bad.  Today were just going to have a salad and Saturday eat the rest of the Tuna noodle Casserole.

Sunday maybe going to Red Lobster.  Go to their website ... i guarantee it will make you hungry.

Does looking forward to a meal motivate you to stay hungry?

Endless shrimp not withstanding, I plan to be under 200 pounds early next week.

Seth says
I actually dipped below 200 pounds the first time in zillions of years.  The final straw was a salad day and walking 4 1/2 miles.  Today i cook, hopefully the planned sweet and sour pork and risotto.

Seth says
I was surprised that with my Sweet and Sour Pork with Risotto and Pineapple Vegies meal, i lost .6 of a pound.  But then i walked 4 miles, so that probably explained it.

Seth says
Yesterday was a watermelon day but i got too hungry and had to eat a over ripe banana with my honey mustard dressing.  We walked 4 1/2 miles, but only lost .7 pounds ... go figure.

Today the plan is for fresh salmon patties and a salad and a bit of walking.

Seth says
Well i walked 5 miles after the Fresh Salmon Cakes with Cucumber and Avacado Salad meal, but then i followed that with a strawberry shortcake with Splenda sweetening.  For the shortcake i use just one slice of Banna Nut Cream Cake from Best Brands (pictured). Didn't gain any and didn't loose any.  Denise on the other hand ate a McDonalds 1/4 pounder with frys and a coke, didn't walk, ate the shortcake too, and gained .7 pound.

We had completed a little experiment explaining why you loose weight while you sleep.  Turns out that she lost 1.1 pounds overnight ... .68 or that was pee, the other .42 is unexplained.  She probably used it to maintain her temperature at 98.6.

When you have a pineapple day how many pineapples do you eat?  When you have a watermelon day how many do you eat? Any other monolithic days?

On a watermelon day i would typically eat one of those little individual ones.  On a pineapple day probably a whole one too.  But i don't measure it that way.  I cut up tow of them and then dish them out in bowls.  The problem with the watermelon days for me has been that usually i can't stick to them and eat some other food along with the watermelon.

Gained .9 pounds on my Turkey meatballs with pineapple sweet sour sauce over rice meal even after walking 5 miles ... two on the trail and three in the mall.   Of course that doesn't say a whole hell of a lot, just theat the meal is still in my belly. But next time i'll cut the plate down to 3 meatballs and less sauce and even lower the sweetener in it.

Thanks for the info.  I could probably eat 3/4 of a regular sized watermelon or a whole one in one day; maybe 2 pineapples.  Something tells me that you would gain info by monitoring your water intake which has more to do with weight change on a daily basis. Exercise looses water via sweat.  What you are doing apparently works as the trend line over a considerable time shows weight loss.

Yep, the thing about the BHD is that your really can eat as much of one fruit as you want, or maybe i should say as you can stand, and still loose weight on a regular basis.  Thing is, is that the way you want to eat in the long term?  My answer is no!

Right now we kind of eat 2 to 3 real meals a week and do fruit/fasts on the other days.  You can almost see that in the saw-tooth look of the graph.  I had been on a 9 day streak of loosing or not gaining which had been broken by yesterday's meal, so  breaking that streak was a disappointment.  I had hoped that the extra exercise and the true lack of calaries in the meal would have compensated.  Oh well!

Today will be fruit/fast and maybe eat the leftovers tomorrow.  Saturday or Sunday we will be going to Salmon Days and will probably eat a nice meal at our favorite Coho Cafe in Issaqua.  It's almost become a tradition. So I expect 3 or 4 days this week of gains.  But we will see, Denise is pushing for more fruit fast days ... she wants to get down into the 150s.  Then too she refuses to eat pineapple any more ... says she is finished with it.  Eating lots of fresh pineapple can be harsh on the mouth - i don't know how to prevent that.  So as we get into fall and winter, times will be changing.

Seth says
Well i lost 1/2 pound on the leftovers of Turkey meatballs with pineapple sweet sour sauce over rice with the reworked Pineapple Sweet and Sour Sauce made with Splenda and 4 hours of walking, whereas i had gained on the original meal and 5 hours walking ... go figure.  LOL, does that mean that food looses calories in the fridge?  Today am going to be making a salmon patty and eating more of the cabbage in the fridge.  Tomorrow we pig out in Issaqua.

One thing never explained is Seth's anomalous reading at the beginning of the weight log at 3/5/2009 of 258.5 - should that be 228.5 or did you lose 38 pounds between 3/5 and 7/21 of '09 ?

Well the story is told in this graph from the item above.  I started the chart way back early in 2007 and had gone on a diet then and lost about 30 or more pounds. Then went for a long time without charting and gained it all back.  Starting in July of this year i did weigh at least 258.  Then in July i started charting again and  lost  the 38 pounds the chart shows.  But thing is I made a mistake and deleted lots of rows in the chart because of a confusion in how the graph and chart worked together.  Sorry that history is lost.

So, yes, the facts are as recorded, but the time-line is discontinuous at the anomaly.

Seth says
Lost 1.1 pounds by eating 1 cup of leftover shrimp fried rice with halved cherry tomatoes with my Splenda egg mustard salad dressing.   Of course i walked 5 1/2 mile along the Cedar River trail to burn it off.  All this is in preparation from the trip to Deception Pass to cast Lote's ashes to the wind and see all the Elaine family.  We plan to eat later at Jumbos Buffet in Oak Harbor.  Started today with a big signature breakfast but even if i totally pig out at the lunch, i'll still don't expect to get back to 196.

Seth says
Well at 189.5, i finally made my goal of under 190 by my birthday.  Now i intend to stay within the range of 180-190.  So i still have about 10 pounds to go before i can relax the diet.  Denise wants to get down to 150 and is having a harder time.  Not quite sure why.

Today we eat the remaining frozen keish grandma made while she was here.  We usually do not gain any on the keish.  Sunday we intend to go out and celebrate getting the 2009c catalog totally out.  Hopefully i won't start Monday over my range.

I believe most of the health benefits i wanted have been achieved now by getting my weight below 190 and don't expect any more dramatic health benefits.  And it must be recorded that i have started to become much more productive at working.  But lately i have been struggling with hunger and am looking forward to satisfying just a bit of that, but not all of it.  I continue to think about how it will be when we relax the diet.  Will i just bounce right back up?  How can i not, and also eat so that i am not struggling with hunger most of the time?  That is the challenge to my new plastic eating  habits.

Yesterday i discovered that week old shrimp fried rice wrapped in lettuce dipped in my secret goat cheese sauce is hauntingly delicious.  I might try it wrapped in cooked cabbage and baked ... maybe use cream cheese rather than goat cheese (which is substantially the same thing).  I don't know ... sometimes Denise's pallet is my biggest challenge.  Maybe Saturday i can take another run at Brioche with pastry flour which strangely enough you can't buy at Fred Meyer any more.

Congrats! Kudos!  I am intermittantly working on some kind of NLP formula to supplant or transform the hunger feeling into something more congruent with my goals. Something probably similar to karezza.  It's easy to forget hunger if I am busy doing other things.

I certainly can see the similarity of reveling in hunger to coitus reservatus ... so that overeating in a meal or jumping the guns is like cuming.  With that metaphor i'm getting into the foreplay by researching and cooking and watching the food channel but not eating.  Incidentally the fried rice wrapped in cabbage leaves and baked did not work ... fell apart ... the cabbage was too chewey or would have burned, needed to be boiled first before the wrapping and baking.  Warmed fried rice wrapped in lettuce and  drizzeled with secret goat cheese sauce worked much better.  Did i cum though?  Bear in mind that this dinner needs to go for about 24 hours, but yes i'm full enough ... should have stopped a couple of strokes sooner.

Seth says
Well cool, i lost over half pound on my Mashed Garlic Turnips and Potatoes with Pineapple Cabbage meal.  Today we go to La Fuente to celebrate our birthdays.

Seth says
Well I went down in my range between 180 and 190 again after a pineapple day after the anomalous reading on Tuesday that jumped me up to 191.  I doubt that the sampling of the Brioche had all that much to do with it.  From here it is going to be another day of basically fasting, except of course for an occasional culinary experiment.  We had planned a veggie day consisting of mashed garlic turnips and cabbage, but that has been postponed to Thursday.

Seth says
Well i lost .2 pound on the second day of the veggie burgers whereas i gained 2 pounds on the first day.  I'm pretty sure that the burger itself is not fattening, beyond that we are just talking about waste disposal timings.  Today is for fruit, cantaloupe and honeydew, tomorrow we try chicken drumsticks barbecued on our new George Foreman Grill with steamed veggies.

Did the fresh pineapple irritate your mouth? It does mine when I chew it up a lot.

It irritates Denise's mouth too ... to the point that she didn't want to eat any more.  Mine too, but i have learned to tolerate it.  I think if you bake the pineapple in some kind of dish that goes away.
By googling around I found that probably is the side effect of it's main enzyme bromelin. Messing with it by cooking seems to be countering why it's useful. I guess I used to swallow it a lot faster rather than chewing as much as the NBHD suggests.
Did you know Judy Mazel died a couple of years ago from peripheral vascular disease at  the ripe old age of 63.  Must have been the genetics, unless it is overdosing on pineapple!

Well i had all the symptoms of PVD prior to going on my NBHD.  Those symptoms have now  decreased.  I suspect that the same applied to JM and that her diet, rather than contribute to her demise, actually delayed it considerably.  In fact most of my reasons for going on the diet were considerations for the health of my heart.  Having to get new jeans because my old ones kept falling off was more of a nuisance than goal.  Not so for my better half, she now dreams of getting into a size 10.

Did you make your chart in something besides Google ?
Nope, it's just Google documents all the way.  Make a spreadsheet and then they give you the ability to attach a graph.

Well i'm back to my floor (180.9 lbs) after the Thanksgiving pigout. Today is the last day of eating the leftovers. Not sure where i go from here:  Do i declare 180 my perminant floor, or do i keep pushing the floor down ... maybe to 175?

My experience with the diet can be seen here. It works. I feel almost as tired as with fasting. I can't say yet whether I feel healthier although recently I thought I was getting a cold about 3X and they never showed up! I have yet to add exercise.  Am thinking more in the line of Tai Chi than walking.

i like your comments column, ill probably add that to mine too.  The feeling gired may be more suggestion than real, imho.  Now with my reduced calarie eating i don't feel tired much ever ... though i remember some of that i the beginning.  Me thinks its more of a mental habit than anything real.

I don't know what to call the feeling.  It first showed up in my 19-day fast. It feels mostly like a gravitational pull; maybe worthy of investigation; perhaps levitation.  The mornings I feel that I have lost weight. After Thanksgiving meals I didn't.

Seth says
I added comments columns for both me and Denise showing what we ate the day before causing the change in weight.  Thanks, M, for the good idea.

Btw, the strawberry cheese cake was delicious.  I made it from ripe bananas, cream cheese, goats cheese, and made strawberry glaze, pretty much following this recipe.  It's amazing that i can still loose some weight eating such delicious food.  Today gonna make tuna noodle casserole.  For me it's all about the taste of the food, and the attitude i adopt towards it.  The cooking is just as fun as the eating.  Looking forward to the mid day meal is what keeps me from piecing.

Seth says
If you paste a URL in a column of the spreadsheet (see 12/9), then when you select, Google puts a gadget to take the hyperlink ... so i can hyperlink my cooking items in my blog with the spreadsheet.  I was surprised that i stayed the same weight after eating that humongous meal and strangely enough Denise ate less of it (no cheesecake) and ended up gaining, but she confessed that she ate about 10 Spanish peanuts, that's her piecing Jones.
