My physics professor Dr. Polluck (UCLA ~1960) gave the basics lecture demo of heating a very big bolt with a blowtorch and then confining it's ends to the new length of the bolt and watching it cool.  It broke of course. This was supposed to illustrate the strong binding force of the atoms & molecules which made up the material.  Fast forward to the notion of elastic energy in the article above & then see if some form of harnessing this energy by heating materials by the sun & then letting the force of contraction pull something together.  Perhaps an engine like the little electric motor we had as children or some kind of reciprocal engine. See also 7472 for inspiration.
Rather than reciprocating, maybe a rack & pinion arrangement would work with the rack being attached to a rod which is heated & cooled & the large gear transmitting it's it's rotation to a clockwork arrangement of gears which ultimately drives a generator.  Here are some more mechancs which might help or maybe this .  I need to master the parameters generally described as the strength of materials to see whether this can be done. I don't want a bolt to break or wear out & this seems like the ideal way to make it break.
