Are you so sure that you are not confusing "awareness" with "panic"?
It's the quality of the headlines & the subsequent dire predictions of the UN & our national politicians which tell me that it is panic.  Politicians always depend upon panic & "the sky is falling" predictions & a sense of crisis in order to create a need for government action & in particular their own usefulness to to solve a problem!
Glad you asked!
Human nautre pretty much requires that actions be motivated.  Sans some motivation a population of people will not change their behavior.  Fear is a great motivator.  Guilt or Power are other ones.  Greed for profit is perhaps the best one for the case in point.  I say some political force needs to be applied to get people off their duff and doing something to adapt to the new situation.

The length of this list is a good reason why changing our behavior to adpat to global warming might form a rubic for a new ethic.
The length tells us the number of people who are in the grips of hysteria over a natural phenomena fueled by the M$M, Democrats & liberals including Algore, & pseudo-scientists who profit from government handouts.  If you like panic, you should look at the November panic watch  here.  My most favorite of all is the flesh-eating bacteria which is real enough, but may or not be in your neighborhood!
The number of people who are caught up in the global warming hysteria is beginning to prove Lincoln's assertion that you can fool all of the people some of the time.

BTW, rubic invented a toy cube, you may be thinking of rubric.
I like in particular the meaning below which is appropriate:

So in your mind & that of Algore the end justifies the means - a lie is just as good as genuine science as long as it produces something you think should be done.  I don't like governmental force on anything. Adolf & Bill C. mastered the big lie & look at the results.

Mark de LA says
seth 2007-12-01 10:06:58 8676
Holding to a binary "the ends do not justify the means" is silly.   One makes judgements at every step of a process and weighs the pros and cons of each action.  Holding to a principal is usually good, but not always, somtimes we need to be practical and just do what works.   There are not cut and dryed rules that always apply.
I have always said for some time that the ends & the means must be justified.  To say that it's OK to lie just to get what you want sounds to me like you are justifying sociopathology. Got something against binary?

Binary (read "ideal") does not work here and you can say whatever you like, i choose differently.  I choose to live in the real world, not some ideal world that exists only in one's imagination.

Let's say there is no effective remedy for a malady.  Yet a doctor prescribes a medicine, tells the patient that it will help, and the patient takes the medicine and gets better.  The medicine is a placebo.  My judgement here is that the doctor did a good job and acted ethically.  What is yours?

...I would say good result, bad process up to and including fraud or malpractice! The analogy is not correct with respect to Gaia & the global warming hysteria otherwise you could give the Earth a good shot of Haldol in it's global warming regulator & everything would be OK (or maybe a placebo).  In fact the Cap-and-Trade fraud and carbon credits is exactly a placebo.  All it does is create a new economy of carbon credits without reducing anything while taxing the power & chemical industries which are needed. See this article if you are interested in the effects of such policies on the economy.

Apparently many doctors disagree ...

Placebos are a surprisingly common prescription, according to a U.S. study in which nearly half of the doctors surveyed said they had doled out a dummy pill at some point.
... You need to look at all the consequences of an action ... it is not a binary choice of good/bad means.  Then you need to look at all the consequences of no action. Just flashing "the end does not justify the means" if you can find something that you subjectively judge as bad is to approach life as a bureaucrat.

Mark de LA says
Since early Common Logic I have said that the end and the means have to be true, beautiful & good for me to align with the project with all my heart, mind & energies.  It is easy to build straw men to illustrate your point.  It is hard to find all the consequences to any proposed action. Let me try this scenario on you: suppose I scare you with a dire scenario that would threaten your family & child.  Further suppose that as a result I can gain some money from you to mitigate the circumstances. (BTW, that is the criteria for all government power!) Still further, suppose I take that money and do some good with it like build an orphanage or help find a cure for cancer & subsequently the dire consequences never pan out.  Does that good justify the way I got the money from you ?
The current global warming boondoggle is worse than that scenario because there is likely to be harm both to the economy & countries of the world as well as things like the fluorescent light-bulb debacle & lots of carbon-offset scams which only harm the participants.  Freedom & freedom from fear nurtures more ingenuity & markets than the totalitarian governments of the Soviet Union & the Middle East!  Who doesn't want cheap &/or free energy? It was a quest long before Algore was invented!

Seth says
More on the placebo study here

I'm not arguing against your chosen principals ... you are free to choose them as i am free to choose mine.   For my part i do not choose to implement a lot of brittle binary rules ... that's not the way i live my life.  Rather i choose to make value judgements within a context of what is intended and what is practical to accomplish and the overall effect of my actions on the world around me.

Your last paragraph above assumes that man's devistating effect on future climate is a lie, yet you will be hard pressed to rationally prove that.  I don't buy your assumption.  You also assume that planning for and mitigating man's devistating effect on future climate will "harm both the economy & countries of the world" .... but i don't buy that assumption either.  Those countries who have invested heavily in a clean environment like Germany, and to a certain extent Japan and even segments of the US, have and will continue to reap economic benefits.  The only people who will be loosing are those who stubbornly fight to protect their investments in a dying technology.  Adapt or die.  Or not ... continue arguing about it while others take action and make practical changes and profit from them.  For my part i choose to throw in with those trying to adapt.  That's the course that makes a better world regardless of what the weather turns out to be later this century.

Mark de LA says
How hard is it for you to change your habits from misspelling the word devastating to needing that word to hype with? How hard is it to change from scaremongering to cooperation? Do you need scaremongering to get your way or tout the ways of liberal church?
Cooperation is like fusion (cf. the Sun) - it's a lot more powerful without wasting the energy of combat (fission) which produces a whole bunch of very undesirable fallout.

We are actually on the same page I just don't like the scaremongering you like to use. It is a waste of time & resources. I have been watching the inventions & alternative energy series also on the Science Channel & it looks like there is an abundance of inventors & investors finding new & different ways to power things besides oil & coal. Only a few of them seem to have bought into the hype; most have the self interest of the market place & real science.
BTW, did you get any of those LED light bulbs yet?

I just don't like the scaremongering you like to use.
Well you might want to study the situation with an open mind before you decide whether the word "devastating" is "scaremongering" or an accurate description.  But perhaps i should have used the term "potentially devastating" in deference to my skeptical friends.

Now i would like to hear you address this thought problem:  assuming that our current industrial habits might have potentially devastating consequences, how are we to change the habits of the mass to mitigate a potential disaster ?  Do you talk to them in equivocating terms that can (and would) be too easily ignored?  Note that i am talking about practical politics here and not idealized principals.

Logic is great .... survival is better?

Seth says

BTW, did you get any of those LED light bulbs yet?
Strangely enough, actually acquiring LED light bulbs is not yet easy.  None of the local lighting or hardware stores that i have tried carry them.  I'll need to scout the online resources.

I did manage to get some LED Christmas lights for my small table top tree ... they are much better than the old ones.

For the most part the conservitive consumer does not have practical choices yet.  This needs to change.  More about that later.

Mark de LA says
Survival will just bring us a world inhabited exclusively by cockroaches or viruses!
I do not accept your premise for the thought experiment.  I suggest promoting a love for Gaia & the Earth. Like the Golden Rule, it is an individual thing.  We could no more force whole countries whose people do NOT all think alike to govern by the Golden Rule than we would expect everyone in the country to drink orange juice. But, notice that if each takes on his own local influence to be governed by the Golden Rule eventually we will all get there.
Promote a fusion of ideas based on the principle of Love for our Earth & the abundance therein & individuals cooperating with each other. I still respect the ingenuity of Americans, working in freedom to come up with more answers than a scared bunch of sheep restricted by a BIG, over-taxing GOVERNMENT!
It is sound principles, realised, which bring about the true, beautiful & good.  Expedience in the light of (context of) scaremongering only brings about the worlds like those of the Nazis & Saddam Hussein's Iraq.

Mark de LA says
BTW, there is no urgency (that's the principle of the scaremongers)!  There is plenty of time for my suggestions to gather steam.  If you are familiar with most con games you will notice that urgency is what makes the marks buy into the con. See the movie The Sting if you don't remember how it works.

So you have just changed the question from " how are we to change the habits of the mass to mitigate a potential disaster ? " to how do you get people to follow the Golden Rule.  You have in effect kicked the can down the street, rather than providing a motive to solve the problem.

People do respond to fear of consequences, and people do invent ways to profit by avoiding those consequences.  This why Gore and others have not watered their words down.   Those "scare words" have formed the basis for the "adaptive behavior" that is happening in the world today.  Shouting against those "scare words" works directly against the motive for this  "adaptive behavior".   People give lip service with words like "Promote a fusion of ideas based on the principle of Love for our Earth & the abundance therein & individuals cooperating with each other" to excuse their own lack of "adaptive behavior" or to justify their investment in the technologies that must eventually die off.

According to Gore's previous estimates we should already be gonnners! There are many professional scientists who do not buy into the propaganda of the left scaremongers & those with an interest in govenment grants & job security. Go read the material at junkscience.com! If you look around you  & others look around themselves & turn off  the  left-leaning media that  thrives on  crisis  you  will  notice  that change is mostly gradual & runs in cycles.
