Let us create a convention of staying strickly on topic.

One of the strengths of this  semantic river is that it helps us focus and solve problems.  However there is a tendency in public dialogue to diverge from focus. We see this as "off topic" comments.  I suggest that we start creating a habitual behavior right now of keeping our comments strickly on topic.  If we do that we are magnifying the ability of this dialogue to focus.

If your comment is inspired by an item, yet is still not pertinant to that item,  well ... just create another item.  Items are cheep and easy.  Don't avoid creating new ones.

Anarchists, like terrorists, can fuck anything up. The whole internet or the webmaster of the site has to be powerful enough to squash them or give into them & enjouy the anarchy.
... does not need to "squash" them, only needs to pervent their productions from becomming noise to the rest of us. I think, with your suggestion of "private tag rooms" we may just have a shot with this :))

Seth says
when this bug is fixed, then i expect that anyone in the group who detects an off topic comment will just sumarialy delete it. Those complaining that their comments are dissapearing will swiftly learn of this convention.

& here I thought you were a prophet of chaos (;-))

Seth says
.. nope, just not afraid to face it head on. One does not run from chaos, one embraces and uses it. But one also knows when and where it needs to be eliminate. Focus<->Chaos .... Restraint<->Freedom ... balancing those pendulums is our choice.

This invites the question of where the moderation comes from, if any. It relates to the item below. Does the webmaster have the ability & time to identify stuff that does not fit within the purpose & decency of the website. Can he automatically or otherwise shift porn & profanity to a private ~porn tagroom & group. Is there a ~porn group possible etc.

I use the website - Webshots as a source for a lot of my pictures. I have noticed tNOT hat a lot of the pictures it pulls up by topic & keyword are just pictures of people & friends which should probably be done on flikr or some other community photo gallery. It's nice to look for pictures of apes & NOT find a picture of your relatives & friends. The webshots website becomes useless if if evolves in the flikr direction.

Need to state some policy for group moderation and overall moderation if you want any on a front page or easily accessible page from the front page

Off topic is a judgement call - hence moderation. When movement of items between groups etc. becomes possible - then it will be easy for a webmaster to move an item that is off-topic to an appropriate place and leave a trail of bread crumbs somewhere to the new residence. Otherwise what you suggest becomes dictatorial & nazi-like & will only dissatisfy an unconstrained blogosphere.

i.e. summary deletions will raise the question of bugs in your software & unreliability as a medium of expression - i would caution doing it.

Well we are here talking about comments affixed on items and not the appropriateness of the item to the group.  But both of those judgement calls must be the judgement call of the group and not of the webmaster or even of the censors.   A group is the supreme authority within the group.  I would not conuntenance any "dictatorial & naci-like" befavior of the webmaster to restrain the activities of a group.   Any
"movement of items between groups" would need to be done by the  group and not the webmaster.

But if a group judges a item off charter or a comment off topic, the group should have the right to sumarialy delete it.  There is one assumption here that the system is making.   Any member of the group has the same priviledges as any other member of the group.   Breaking that assumption would not only take a redesign of the sign in system but would also destroy some of the group dynamics that I am trying to encourage.

Well i see this covered well in the faq.  Also it should be covered within each group.  I do expect people to get a sinking feeling when they see their comments dissapear and scream bloody murder.  This will just bring to fore an  awareness of the group dynamics that is functioning in this new medium.   Here we are attempting to solve some of the problems that Usenet could not solve.  There is a tension between individual soveranty and group soveranty.  In this new media when you are in a group, the group has ultimate soveranty not the individual.   If you want total soveranty as an individual, well then become a group of one and don't give anyone else your password.

I still don't see what happens with Group whose sole existence is intended to fuck things up. A group having the final authority seems a bit naive considering the shit that has happened on the internet with porn, worms, spam , viruses etc.
