There is one thing that bugs me about the Washington State democratic caucus.  The one lady who voted for Hillary got disenfranchised because our precinct sent 5 deligates to the next stage all of them pledged to Obama.  Yet if they had run the caucus like they do in Iowa, she could have joined another group allowing her vote to be combined with other like minded individuals.

I don't know who made up these caucus rules, but whoever did had their heads up they ass.

Do you think that if you pursued this path through "democrat in action" you would be able to influence the Democrat party platform or that of your candidate? Particularly interesting would be the distinctions of 714.  I cut that one down to a much refined analogy - viz. one would not / should not argue about a person's preference for a strawberry or banana flavoring in their ice cream.  To gather together in crowds & mobs to support one over the other (or one interest over the other) is ridiculously empty headed & mean-spirited.

Well i don't think that caucuses are any magical path to democracy.  All they do is involve people socially in the process.  It's one thing to hear from the msm that people are thinking like "Hillary has more experience and hense we should elect her rather than Obama" than to hear that from a real person.  I went primarialy to improve my awareness of the process ... ie out of curiosity ... rather than with a specific adgenda to change anything.  Below is another Washington blogger's view of the caususes ...

This year, I opted not to caucus. I could tell you it

Did you go to any of the caucuses? How does it work?
I went to the caucus for my district.  You walk in the door and sign your name and address and which candidate you "intend" to vote for.  Then you sit down at a table with other registered voters from  your precinct ... mine was named "roger".   There were 22 voters who showed up.  Then they talleyed the votes and there was a short discussion about beating up on the one voter who wanted Hillary.  She asked why the response was so overwhelming for Obama.  I said it was becaus he was going to get us out of the war.  A short discussion did follow.  It didn't matter though because the tally 21 to 1 meant that all 5 of our deligates for the precinct were going to Obama. Then we chose deligates to go to the next stage.  I put my name down along with 4 others and 5 other alternates including Jason.   There wasn't much of an election because the number of people interested enough in being deligates did not exceed the allocated deligates.   Funny how that happened.   Anyway it looks like me and Jason will be going to the Legislative district cauccus April 5th.   Democracy in action, huh?

I'm a registered independent.  Was not notified of caucuses.  I doubt that any new ideas come from the caucus participants that has not first showed up in the M$M.  If it were true bottom-up democracy then it would be interesting.  Newt has his website trying to do just that. Unfortunately, the process will only yield programs & policies & not generate the principles which ( in his case ) make up the core principles of the Republican party or the Conservative movement.  I have witnessed how such things can be done, but it is really hard to explain in a short comment how to generate core beliefs & a founding vision. Once a founding vision is articulated then the programs & processes are drawn out of them to form a platform, IMHO - instead of the ass-backwards way of doing it today.

In this state your party affiliation is not recorded with your registration data.  I wasn't notified either ... I just got a ballot in the mail, which if i had not questioned, i would have though would have been my vote in the primary.  I fault the local media outlets here in Washington for not clearly infoming the public what they needed to do, to have their vote help select the next president.  Apparently if you want your vote to count, you need to proactively seek out that information.

Your other ideas sound interesting ... perhaps you will elaborate them on another item ... this one is about the Washington State primary.

I knew it was going on from the media hype. I received nothing in the mail. I'm sure I could have attended if I pledged a candidate & a party. OTOH, I cared for none of the above which wouldn't have gone over very well.

BTW, what do you think of the Democrats "superdelegate" notion.  Apparently, the party cigar smokers in the back room will ultimately select their candidate anyway in the case of a close vote from the electorate.
Well the conventional wisdom (what everybody is saying) is that the superdelegates will go with the popular flow. Twarting the will of the people is not a forumla to win the oval office.  Of course, we are assuming that Obama's momentum will continue to build into March and he will carry Texas and Ohio by large margins.  But if we go into the convention without a clear front runner, well then that is what the super deligates are for ... to choose a candidate who will win against McCain.
