About: Six empty boxcars derail near Tacoma

TACOMA, Wash. -- Six empty box cars of a 124-car, 10-locomotive BNSF train derailed on the BNSF main line eight miles south of Tacoma.

BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas says the six cars went off the tracks at 3 p.m. on Sunday, shutting down the line until Monday, when the line is expected to be put back into service. The train was made up of 48 box cars carrying general merchandise and 76 empty box cars.

Melonas says rail traffic continued on Sunday between Seattle and Portland, Ore., on the adjacent BNSF main line.

Cause of the derailment is under investigation.

The derailment occurred about 6530 feet north of the Titlow crossing, and about 1500 feet north of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.
